CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles erased a 15-point second half deficit to take the lead with 22 seconds to play, but Edinboro took the lead on a shot with seven seconds remaining in regulation as the Fighting Scots beat Clarion 60-58 in Tippin Gym on Friday night.
Â
With under 10 minutes to play, it looked like the Fighting Scots might cruise to a double-digit victory. After holding the Golden Eagles to just one field goal for the first nine minutes of the second half, they took a 51-36 lead with 9:35 to go on a pair of free throw from Bryce Baez. The Golden Eagles turned the tables in a big way, though, chipping away at that lead and eventually erasing it completely with a dominant 16-0 run that lasted four minutes of game time.
Â
Kendon Peebles struck the first major blow, draining a three-pointer from the left wint at the 8:42 mark to make it a 51-41 game.
Cam Kearney scored on a midrange jumper on the next trip down the floor, and after
Trey Nelson stole the ball from Baez on the Fightings Scots' next possession, he dished ahead to
Jeremy Thomas II for a thunderous two-handed fast break dunk.
Â
Now with momentum and an emotional wave, the Golden Eagles were ready for the next step.
Justice Easter went coast to coast for a bucket after a swat by Peebles on Daunte Wilcott, and Peebles drained a trey from the deep left corner to cut the Edinboro lead to one point with 6:08 remaining. Easter pushed the Golden Eagles over the edge with a putback, capping the 16-0 run with a bucket that gave Clarion a 52-51 lead.
Â
The teams traded points the rest of the way, with Kearney scoring a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to put the Golden Eagles ahead 58-57. Edinboro's
Steve Kelly made a pull-up jumper with 7.6 seconds remaining to put the Fighting Scots ahead by a point, but Thomas was unable to convert the front end of a one-and-one on the opposite end of the floor, and the Fighting Scots held on for the win.
Â
Neither team did much on offense in the first half, with both sides shooting under 40 percent from the field. Edinboro led 31-30 after 20 minutes of play, after Kearney scored off a missed free throw with 12 seconds remaining. Kearney finished with a game-high 18 points and also added six rebounds. Thomas had 11 points and eight rebounds, as well as two blocked shots. Peebles came off the bench for eight points, four rebounds, a block and a steal.
