CLARION, Pa. — Clarion (5-4, 0-1 PSAC) secured an 84-74 non-conference victory over Lock Haven (2-4, 0-1 PSAC) at Coach Cal Court at Tippin Gym on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles' balanced offense saw five players reach double figures in scoring while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field.
Clarion opened the first half by establishing a strong offensive rhythm, highlighted by
Kendon Peebles, who hit multiple 3-pointers, including one on a fast break, to provide an early spark. The team capitalized on fast break opportunities and executed well in the paint, registering 20 points there and converting 11 points from turnovers. The Golden Eagles embarked on a 14-0 run midway through the half to take a 31-19 lead, but the Bald Eagles countered with a run of hteir own to pull within two points after Devon Nelson's three-pointer made it 33-31.
Despite the close contest, Clarion maintained composure down the stretch.
Justice Easter and
Jeremy Thomas II delivered crucial layups, while
Aydan Cunningham hit a timely 3-pointer to keep the home side ahead. The half closed with Clarion leading the Bald Eagles 40–39, after Blake Deegan made a jumper with 30 seconds left in the half.
The Golden Eagles capitalized on a strong start to the second half with
Gavin Cote and Peebles each hitting 3-pointers, establishing an early advantage. Nelson was instrumental, facilitating the offense with multiple assists during this stretch. Clarion's defense also stepped up, forcing turnovers and converting fast breaks, exemplified by Thomas's early steal leading to a quick score.
Midway through the half, Clarion maintained their lead despite a push from the Bald Eagles, who briefly narrowed the margin with a few successful possessions. However, Clarion's bench contributed significantly, with Cunningham and
Michael Moore adding key points in the paint. Nelson continued to distribute effectively, and Clarion's defense held firm.
In the closing minutes, Clarion extended their lead with a decisive 3-pointer from Cote at 1:31, followed by clutch free throws. Nelson and Thomas contributed final scores to cement Clarion's position. The half ended with Clarion outscoring the Bald Eagles 44-35, concluding the game with an 84-74 victory.
Nelson led the team with 16 points and also added 12 assists for a double-double, his second such effort in the last three games. His 12 assists tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. Cunningham contributed 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while securing six rebounds. Peebles added 14 points and recorded two blocks alongside two steals. Thomas finished with 12 points and collected two steals.
