GREENSBURG, Pa. — Despite a strong effort on the road, including an even shooting effort in the first half, the Clarion soccer team fell by a 1-0 score at Seton Hill on Saturday. The Golden Eagles put four of their nine shots on goal and made six saves but were held off the scoreboard.
The Golden Eagles went into halftime trailing 1-0 after the Griffins' Leah Kessler scored in the 16th minute off an assist from
Maddie Teakle. Earlier,
Sage Sherk made a save 17 seconds into the match, and the Golden Eagles generated two saved chances of their own through
Samantha Gold in the 12th minute and
Nadia Gill in the 15th. After the goal, the Golden Eagles absorbed a Griffins push from 24:52 to 33:16 that included a blocked shot, two corner kicks and a Sherk save, keeping the margin at one. Clarion closed the half with three more attempts, including a saved shot by
Kailee George in the 42nd minute, but the Griffins carried the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Golden Eagles held the Griffins without a goal in the second half, with Sherk making four saves as Clarion tried to stay within the 1-0 scoreline.
Lexi Shattahi put the Golden Eagles' first chance of the half on frame in the 49th minute, but
Rhys Caplinger made the save, and
Reise Klein later sent a shot high at 59:10. Clarion absorbed sustained pressure from 53:28 to 63:22, as Sherk stopped shots by
Eliza Artell and
Mia Lindborg while the Griffins also generated three corner kicks during that stretch. Sherk added saves on
Kilee Coatney and an
Abby Myers header in the 73rd minute before the Golden Eagles had late looks from
Evelyn Cook, whose shot was blocked, and
MaKenna Doran, who missed wide. The second half finished scoreless, and the Golden Eagles fell 1-0.
Sherk recorded six saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal. Cook led the Golden Eagles with two shots.
