EDINBORO, Pa. --- Ciara DiMauro tied the program record for career goals in the 90th minute of action, but the Golden Eagle soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Edinboro on Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles held the Fighting Scots scoreless in the second half and generated eight of their nine shots after halftime but could not overcome a three-goal first-half deficit.
DiMauro's goal came in the final minute of action, off an excellent display of passing from the Golden Eagles. Kelly O'Donnell stole the ball off the Fighting Scots on the lefthand sideline and lobbed a pass downfield to Lexi Shattahi. Shattahi dribbled into the box and then crossed the ball to the right side to DiMauro, who pushed a shot past Brianna Garey for her fourth goal of the season.
The goal, the 18th of DiMauro's career, ties her with Jill Miller's career record set from 2007-10. DiMauro achieved the mark in 60 games and will have one more chance to surpass the career mark next week when Clarion hosts Gannon.
The Golden Eagles held the Fighting Scots scoreless for more than 27 minutes, but the home side scored three times before halftime to put the Golden Eagles down 3-0 at the break. Sage Sherk started in goal and the Golden Eagles navigated a physical opening stretch that included four combined fouls from 12:29 to 22:03 while the match remained scoreless. Leah Deal had the Golden Eagles' best chance of the half in the 24th minute, putting a shot on goal that Brianna Garey saved. After Jada Cole scored at 27:47, Sherk made saves on Cole and Hailey Marchlewski during the Fighting Scots' continued pressure, but Grace Madison added a goal at 31:53 and Marchlewski scored at 38:07 to close the first-half scoring.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles generated chances through Alyssa Aquilio, MaKenna Doran and DiMauro, with each putting a shot on goal that Garey saved. Sherk kept the Golden Eagles within reach during the Fighting Scots' late pressure, making second-half saves at 63:51, 68:46, 77:12, 78:02 and 84:56 while the Fighting Scots also hit the woodwork in the 82nd minute. The Golden Eagles continued to press after DiMauro's goal, with Shattahi forcing another save at 89:57 before the match ended with the Fighting Scots ahead 3-1.
