CALIFORNIA, Pa. — The Golden Eagles softball team 8-14, 2-6 PSAC-W) faced off against California (PA) (9-17, 4-4 PSAC-W) in a thrilling doubleheader at Lilley Field on Sunday, falling 12-11 after a thrilling comeback attempt in the first game before bouncing back for a 10-6 win in the late game. Clarion exploded for 22 hits and 22 runs against the Vulcans.
Game 1: California (PA) 12, Clarion 11
The Golden Eagles fell in a heart-stopping 12–11 defeat, despite a thrilling eight-run rally in the seventh inning. The Vulcans clinched the win with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Eagles' explosive seventh inning initially seized momentum, transforming an 8–3 deficit into an 11–8 lead. Sophie Petrash sparked the rally with a bunt single and a stolen base, eventually scoring on
Alexis Valencia's RBI single.
Delanie Davison and
Sabi Medrano each added clutch hits, with Medrano's double driving in two runs.
Jordy Best's RBI single and Petrash's two-run homer further fueled the comeback.
However, the early lead established by the Golden Eagles in the second inning was undone by a series of middle-inning challenges. California took advantage of a throwing error to cut the lead to one, and a bases-loaded double in the sixth widened the Golden Eagles' deficit, setting up the dramatic final inning. California (PA) sealed the victory with a walk-off sequence that kicked off with a two-run homer by Linkous, followed by a solo shot from Kirra Davis. This late surge pushed Cal ahead after the Golden Eagles had mounted their impressive comeback.
Medrano led the team with two runs scored and two RBIs, including a double. Petrash delivered a standout performance with three hits, two RBIs, and a home run, scoring twice.
Emma Hipps also contributed offensively with two runs and a hit, adding a stolen base to her stats.
Game 2: Clarion 10, California (PA) 6
In Game 2, the Golden Eagles soared to a 10–6 victory over California (PA) fueled by a decisive six-run explosion in the seventh inning.
Sabi Medrano shone with a triple and two RBIs, playing a pivotal role in the win. The Vulcans initially took the lead with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Kirra Davis, putting them up 3–0. The Golden Eagles answered in the fifth, closing the gap to 5–3, thanks to
Rian Reed's RBI single and Sophie Petrash's clutch RBI triple, which kept Clarion in contention.
In the seventh, Clarion's offense erupted. Down 6–4, they rallied for six runs to seize a 10–6 lead. The sequence ignited with
Avery Bellish drawing a walk, followed by key singles from Petrash and
Alexis Valencia.
Jordy Best reached on a crucial error, extending the inning and piling on runs.
Emily Buchleitner's two-RBI single up the middle capped the rally, cementing the comeback. Despite a late challenge from Cal with two runners on base in the final inning, the Golden Eagles' defense stood strong, clinching the victory. This comeback highlighted their knack for seizing opportunities and delivering under pressure.
Ainsley Perdicaris had a standout relief showing in the circle, pitching 3.0 innings with one earned run on five hits, striking out one batter and issuing no walks.
Alexis Valencia had two hits and drove in two runs, bolstering the Golden Eagles' offense.
Delanie Davison scored twice on two hits. Buchleitner added three RBIs and stole a base. Petrash scored twice and notched a triple.
