CLARION FALLS TO NO. 19 WHEELING JESUIT 3-0.

Laura Subject finished with 21 set assists, four digs, and two kills.

Box Score CLARION, Pa – The Golden Eagles fall to No. 19 Wheeling Jesuit 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gymnasium.

Wheeling Jesuit (27-2 overall, 12-0 WVIAC) won the first set in a close battle 25-21 before taking the second set easily 25-14.  Clarion continued to fight in the third set, but the Cardinals were able to close it out 25-19.

“I thought we played much better than last night,” Clarion head coach Jennifer Mills said.  “We showed more hustle today and were able to dig out more balls.”

Emily Stewart led Clarion with six kills and five digs, while Rebecca Webb finished with five kills.  Hannah Heeter and Carlie Bieranowski each finished with four kills.  Jocelyn Uchic chipped in with three kills and four digs, while Laura Subject set up the offense with 21 set assists and four digs.

Rebecca Ferragonio finished with 14 digs giving her 514 on the season.  That moves her into 13th place for the season single season record.

In the first set, the score was 9-9 before Wheeling Jesuit used a 7-1 run to pull ahead.  The Cardinals were able to close out the set 25-21.

In the second set, Wheeling Jesuit jumped out to a 10-4 lead before eventually pulling away winning the set 25-14.

In the third set, Clarion trailed 16-13 before the Cardinals used a 5-0 lead to give them the momentum.  Wheeling Jesuit was able to close out the set 25-19 giving them the 3-0 victory.

“We went with a different lineup in the third set,” said Mills.  “We were looking to make changes to give us a chance to get blocks at the net.”

Allissa Ware led Wheeling Jesuit with 12 kills and five digs, while Madison Strall finished with 15 set assists, 12 digs, and six kills.

With the loss, Clarion falls to 22-7 overall with a record of 12-3 in the PSAC West.  The Golden Eagles stand alone in second place in the standings.  Gannon currently has a one game lead over Clarion for first place.

“Every match is huge from here on out,” said Mills.  “We have lots of preparation and work ahead of us this upcoming
week before we play IUP and California.”

Clarion returns to action at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening where it will host IUP.

NOTES – Rebecca Webb now has 908 career kills.  That is 14th all time in Clarion history.  Webb always has 440 career blocks putting her in 5th place in school history.  Laura Subject needs 96 more set assists to move into the top 10 in school history for career set assists.  For a single season, Subject is 15th in set assists with 975. She needs 25 assists to become the ninth different player in school history with 1,000 in a career. It has been accomplished 14 times by 9 different players.  She trails Amanda Gough who finished with 1,045 set assists in 2011.
