GOLDEN EAGLES FALL TO CAL IN QUARTERFINALS

Rebecca Webb had 15 kills

Box Score CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Despite having four players reach double figures in kills led by 15 from senior middle hitter Rebecca Webb, the Clarion University women's volleyball team was beaten 3-1 by California in the PSAC Quarterfinals Tuesday night at Cal.

The PSAC West third-seeded Golden Eagles (23-11), who entered the match ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, fell behind early losing the first set 25-18 before rallying to tie the match at one with a 25-23 second-set victory. The Vulcans (28-6), the PSAC West second seed and top team in the Atlantic Region, won a close set, 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead and then closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.

Hannah Heeter added 12 kills for Clarion, while Emily Stewart had 11 kills and nine digs. Carlie Bieranowski had 10 kills and eight digs, while Laura Subject added 47 set assists and 14 digs with Rebecca Ferragonio chipping 23 digs.

Meghan Franz had 14 kills to lead Cal, while Kelly Fromknecht had 11 kills, 28 set assists and nine digs.

In the first set, Cal used a 5-1 run late in the set to take control on its way to the 25-18 win.

Then in the second set, Clarion jumped out to an 8-0 lead thanks in part to three Stewart kills before Cal rallied to take a 13-12 lead on a Franz kill. The set then saw five ties and a pair of lead changes before Cal went ahead 22-21.

Clarion, though, retook the lead on a pair of Vulcan errors and a Heeter kills to make it 24-22 before Stewart finished off the set with a kill.

In the third set, Clarion led 9-8 before Cal came back to take a 16-12 lead before a 5-2 Clarion run paced by a pair of Webb kills tied the match at 20. But the Vulcans scored the next two points to retake the momentum.

The fourth set saw Clarion lead early 7-6 before Cal fought back to go up 11-10. The Vulcans then expanded that lead to 21-14 with a 10-4 run.

Clarion now must wait and see if it gets an NCAA Division II Tournament bid to see if its season will continue.
