CLARION HONORS 136 ATHLETES/ DR. BEAL, DR. ROTH, ALLIO, CC TEAM

            (CLARION, PA.): A program record 40% of Clarion University's student athletes were honored “scholar-athletes” on February 3, 2012 at the 22nd Annual Bob Carlson Scholar Athlete Luncheon held at the Gemmell Multi-Purpose Room.

            A total of 136 student athletes were honored by attaining a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Both the 40% and 136 athletes were record numbers since the luncheon was started in 1991.

            Dr. Richard Lane, the new faculty athletics representative, welcomed athletes, faculty, staff, administration and “special guests”.

            “You're a unique group. You're the ones we're counting on for the success of the future,” said Dr. Ron Nowaczyk, Clarion University provost, to the athletes and their guests. Each athlete invited a faculty or staff member who have been influential, supportive or inspirational to him or her.

            Dr. Kevin Roth (MBA '81), professor of administrative science and director of Clarion University's Small Business Development Center, was recognized for 10  years of service as faculty athletics representative at Clarion .             During the program SAAC President Samantha Veights presented Dr. Jon Beal, professor of mathematics, with the “Faculty of the Year” award, as voted on by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee representing all student athletes.

            “Dr. Beal has made a great impact on my love for mathematics as well as teaching, and I am lucky that I was able to have him as a professor,” said softball player Kacie Nemeth. “He deserves this award, and I could not be happier he has won.”

            Dave Katis ('85, '88),
athletic director, presented the Carlson Cup Team Award to the women's cross country team. The award goes to the team that shows the biggest overall increase in GPA during the past calendar year. Bob Carlson is a former athletic director at Clarion.

            To be named a Clarion University “Scholar Athlete”, student-athletes must: achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher; have two consecutive semesters of a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the spring and fall terms of 2011; or be a freshman or new transfer who achieved a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the fall 2011 term.
