CLARION'S MERITT 4th ON 1 METER/SHULL 14TH IN 200 FREE
GOLDEN EAGLES AT NCAA D-II SWIM/DIVE NATIONALS
 
                (Mansfield, Texas): Clarion sophomore diver Ethan Merritt (San Luis Obispo, California) was fourth on one meter and teammate Justin Duncan (Sr. South Park) placed sixth leading the Golden Eagle Men's Swimming and Diving Team at the NCAA D-II Nationals on Thursday night in Mansfield, Texas.
 
                Merritt placed 4th on the one meter  event scoring 517.40 points.  Christopher White of St. Cloud won the event with 556.80 points. Merritt is now a 3-time A-A at Clarion – he was fourth on both boards as a freshman in 2011. Duncan meanwhile placed sixth on one meter collecting 496.75 points. He is now a 5-time All-American.
 
                Also scoring for the diving team, coached by 22nd year head coach Dave Horvat, were  Seth Brandenburg (So. Canton, Oh./Perry) and Heath Calhoun (Fr. Renfrew/Butler). Brandenburg was 10th scoring 447.75 points, while Calhoun was 11th with 440.60 points.
 
                Men's Swimmer  Joe Ward (Jr. Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) competed in the 200 free and swam a prelim time of 1:41.38, but that was only good for 38th place keeping him out of tonight's finals. His time was nearly two seconds faster than his seed time.
 
                In women's swimming Kayla Shull (Jr. Franklin/Rocky Grove) placed 14th in the 200 freestyle to lead the Golden Eagle women's team with a time of 1:52.89. Shull's two best events are still coming up including the 100 backstroke on Friday and 100 free on Saturday.
 
                Morgan Oberlander swam in the 400 IM today and was 24th with a time of 4:33.83.
 
                Held at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium, Drury leads in the men's team scoring with 248 points. Clarion has moved up to 15th place and currently has 41 points. Wayne State leads the women's championship with 261 points, Drury is second with 260. Clarion is 23rd with 20 points.
 
 
                CLARION NOTES: Kristin Day (Reynoldsville/DuBois), who  placed second on the three meter diving on Wednesday, will dive again on Friday night in the 1 meter competition..
