CLARION, Pa. – Clarion University senior javelin thrower
Kim Hanslovan will throw at the NCAA Division II national championships Saturday in Pueblo, Col.
Hanslovan, who was an NCAA Division II All-American in 2010 with a second-place finish, the highest ever by a Golden Eagle women's track athlete, is coming off a fifth-place finish at the PSAC Championships two weeks ago. She has been battling an arm injury most of the season since throwing a season-best 153 feet March 17 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
“Physically, she is in as good a shape as she can be right now,” Clarion head coach
D.J. Bevevino said. “She knows when she throws she is going to experience pain. How that will affect her psychologically I don't know. She will try to bloc it out. But it's the same situation as it was at the Penn Relays (when Hanslovan finished sixth in the championship flight against entirely NCAA Division I competition) and at PSACs. She is hoping she can hit that one good throw and accomplish what she wants to throws. It's been a long couple of months for her.”
Hanslovan, who transferred to Clarion from Penn State following her sophomore season, was the PSAC Champion in the javelin in 2010 and set a school record in the event with a throw of 160-feet, 3-inches. She red-shirted last season, and despite the injury her goal to win a national title has remained the same according to Bevevino. She is seeded fourth in the event behind Seattle Pacific's Brittany Anastad (161-11), Fort Hays St.'s Makayla McPhail (159-4) and Western Oregon's Amanda Schumaker (158-11).
“Her goal at the start of the season was to win a national title,” Bevevino said. “That hasn't changed. The reality of it is she hopes she can throw like she did in South Carolina. If she does that, she will be satisfied considering how everything has gone. But she is still going to shoot for the big thing, and that is to win it all. That is why everyone is here.”
NOTES – Clarion has never had an NCAA Division II champion in women's track & field … Hanslovan is trying to become just the second Golden Eagle to earn multiple All-American awards (given to the top eight finishers) … Erin Richard won All-American honors in the 5,000-meter run (3
rd place) and 10,000-meter run (4
th place) in 2007 … In all, five Clarion women's track and field athletes have earned NCAA Division II All-American status in six events … Hanslovan also finished 14
th at the NCAA Division I national meet in 2009 while at Penn State with a throw of 156-2.
