Box Score CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion University women's volleyball team bounced back from its second loss of the season Tuesday at Wheeling Jesuit to run its record 24-2 overall and 13-1 in the PSAC West with a 3-0 blanking of visiting Edinboro Saturday night at Tippin Gym.
The Golden Eagles made quick work of the rival Fighting Scots winning by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-16, the later two after trailing midway through the sets.
"I'm very proud of the way we came back after Tuesday's loss," Clarion head coach
Jennifer Mills, freshly back in Clarion after being inducted into Barton's Athletic Hall of Fame Friday night, said. "We didn't play well Tuesday at Wheeling. That was on us. But we made some adjustments."
Hannah Heeter, who earlier in the day was honored at the halftime of Clarion's football win over Seton Hill for being named the 2012-13 PSAC Pete Nevins Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, had a big night with 11 kills, four digs and three blocks while hitting .364 (11 kills, 3 errors, 22 attempts).
"Hannah stepped up tonight," Mills said. "You could see in warm-ups she was connecting well. She looks healthy. This is probably the best I've seen her jump. She is brining a more physical presence recently and looks more comfortable. She is also becoming more of a team leader."
Carlie Bieranowski added eight kills, four digs and four blocks with
Emily Stewart chipping in six kills, three service aces, five digs and a block.
Laura Subject once again ran the offense smoothly with 33 set assists while adding nine digs, two service aces and a block.
"Laura is just steady," Mills said. "She has a great attitude and just focus on getting the job done."
Morgan Seybold led the defense with 25 digs.
Clarion used a 6-0 run early in the first set to take control of the set but had to come from behind in the final two sets to get the three-set win.
In the second set, the Golden Eagles trailed 18-14 before closing out the set with an 11-2 run that featured two kills and a block from Stewart and two kills from Bieranowski.
Edinboro, though, came out strong again in the third set grabbing an early 8-1 lead and still led 14-10 before a 10-4 run that saw Stewart get two more kills turned the tide in Clarion's direction.
"I am proud of how we are calmly able to work our way back into matches," Mills said. "I am finding myself panicking less when we get down because of that."
Clarion returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Slippery Rock. It will be the annual Halloween Costume Contest for Clarion students, and the community is encouraged to dress up as well.
