(Edinboro, Pa.): Clarion All-America defensive end
Julian Howsare (Altoona) had an impressive day for the Golden Eagle defense, but when freshman placekicker
Phil Esposito's (Brockway) 34-yard field goal missed inches right with 1:25 left n the game, Edinboro held on to defeat Clarion 9-7 in a PSAC-West and NCAA Division II football game on Saturday afternoon.
Played at Sox Harrison Stadium, the loss put Clarion at 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC-West, while Edinboro moved to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the West.
Edinboro scored first on a Clarion turnover in the first quarter. With Clarion's offense facing a third and five at its own six yard line, qb
Darelle Carson (Fr. Pgh – Perry) and running back
Bobby Thomas (Jr. Reading) missed on the exchange and the ball ended up out of the back of the endzone for an Edinboro safety and a 2-0 lead at 1:38 of the first.
Early in the second the Clarion defense made a big goal line stand. The Scots had a first and goal at the Eagle 9, and fourth goal inside the 1, but on fourth down
Jacob Heintz (Jr. Gibsonia/Pine Richland) broke through and tackled Jeremy Donaldson at the 2 to prevent the Scots from scoring.
Two possessions later the Eagles drove 87 yards in six plays to take a 7-2 lead. After a loss of three on first down, Carson hit
Eric Frye (Fr. Pgh – Perry) for 12 yards, then Carson ran 17 to the Eagle 39. Thomas rushed for 34 yards to the Boro 27, and two plays later Carson kept the pigskin in the read option and went 27-yards to paydirt. Esposito's PAT was good at 5:23 of the second and Clarion led 7-2.
Edinboro came right back and drove 71 yards in 9 plays to take a 9-7 lead. QB Jon Girvin hit on a 30 yard td pass to Marcus Johnson and the Scots led 9-7 with 1:29 to go in the half.
Clarion had two chances to take the lead in the second half – but both opportunities ended in missed field goal attempts.
Late in the third quarter Clarion drove from its own 40 to the Edinboro 31. The Golden Eagles called timeout with 2 seconds left in the quarter so Esposito could try his 48-yard field goal with the 25-30 mph wind at his back. His try from 48 yards had plenty of leg but missed about a foot outside the right upright and Edinboro still led 9-7.
Midway through the fourth quarter Clarion drove to a first and ten at the Boro 35, but couldn't get any further.
On Clarion's final drive the Golden Eagles started at the Edinboro 42. On third and 4 at the Boro 36, Carson hit
Caleb Mancini for 10 yards to the Boro 26. On third and four at the Scot 20, Carson kept the pigskin and dove to the 17, just a yard short of the first down. Esposito came on, and with the ball at the left hash, attempted Clarion's go-ahead 34-yard field goal into the wind, but the ball missed inches outside the right upright with 1:25 to play and Edinboro ran out the clock for the win.
Clarion posted 237 yards of total offense with 180 coming on the ground and 57 yards passing.
Carson had a big day rushing for 130 yards and 1 td, and completed 6 of 11 passes for 57 yards.
