CHRIS WEIBEL NAMED INTERIM FOOTBALL COACH AT CLARION
 
4308                (CLARION, PA.): Chris Weibel, 40, Clarion's Offensive Coordinator and an assistant coach at Clarion for the last eleven seasons, along with being an All-America quarterback for the Golden Eagles, was named Interim Head Football Coach today by Athletic Director Dave Katis. He will continue in that position until the search for a new head coach has been completed.
 
                Weibel steps in for former head coach Jay Foster, who retired as head coach on December 2.
 
                "I am pleased to announce that Chris Weibel has been named Interim Football Coach here at Clarion University and will remain in that role until we complete our national search and name a new head coach," said Athletic Director Dave Katis. "Chris is a loyal and dedicated coach here at Clarion and has been an integral part of this program since he was a student-athlete here from 1993 – 98. We are happy to have Chris serve in this role at this important time for the program."
 
                "I am excited about stepping into this role as Interim Head Coach and leading my alma mater until a new coach is in board," said Weibel. "My time here as a student-athlete and as a coach has been very special and I want to do everything I can to help this program succeed. I thank Dave Katis for his support, and want to thank both Jay Foster and Malen Luke for their trust in me over the years."
 
                A native of East Brady, Pa. and a 1993 graduate of Kittanning High School, Weibel came to Clarion in the Fall of 1993 and had a storied career as the Eagles quarterback.

8660                His top season came in 1996 when he led the Golden Eagles to an 11-3 overall record, the PSAC-West title, the NCAA Division II East Region Crown and a berth in the NCAA "Final Four" before losing in the final seconds to Northern Colorado 19-18. Clarion was also awarded the Lambert Cup in 1996. Weibel, an All-American that season, completed 208 of 356 passes for 2,880 yards and 32 td's. He ranked #2 in the nation in passing efficiency.
 
                In 1995 he helped Clarion to a 6-4 record and passed for 2,017 yards and 14 td's. Missing most of the 1997 season with an injury, he came back in 1998 to pass for 2,462 yards and 16 td's. The holder of 5 career and 3 single season records, Weibel completed 586 of 1,065 passes for 7,845 yards and 65 td's, while totaling 8,136 yards of total offense.
 
                After graduating from Clarion in 1998 with a degree in Marketing, he played nearly 5 years of professional football including the Erie Invaders (IFL) in 2000, Florida Firecats (AFL 2) in 2001, Greensboro Prowlers (AFL 2) in 2002, Myrtle Beach Sting Rays (NIFL) in 2003 and signed during the 2004 season with Grand Rapids of the AFL.
 
                During the 2002 season he had his best game completing 23 of 25 passes for 330 yards and 9 td's.
 
                A 2010 inductee into Clarion's Sports Hall of Fame, Weibel has spent 11 seasons coaching at Clarion, the last two as the Offensive Coordinator, and ten full seasons as the quarterbacks coach. He also spent a number of years as the team's recruiting coordindator.
 
                Chris resides in Clarion.
