EAGLES AT #10 SRU - MILK JUG/PSAC/NCAA ON THE LINE

CLARION (7-2, 4-2) TRAVELS TO #10 SLIPPERY ROCK (8-1, 5-1) SATURDAY
SIXTH ANNUAL "MILK JUG GAME" KICKS OFF AT 1PM

Here Comes The Jug – Milk Jug that is!

Saturday at 1pm the Sixth Annual battle for the Milk Jug resumes at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium when #10 Slippery Rock hosts Clarion in a matchup that could determine the PSAC-West title.

What's on the line besides the Milk Jug?

A Slippery Rock win clinches the West title for the Rock. A Clarion win, coupled with an IUP loss at Gannon and a Cal loss against Mercyhurst would create a 3-way tie and Clarion would be declared the West representative in the PSAC Championship game.

Of course there are also NCAA Playoff implications for everyone on Saturday. The top 7 teams in the Region will qualify for post-season play. Slippery Rock is currently ranked #4 in Super Region 1, while IUP is 6th, Cal is #9 and Clarion is ranked #10.

All the game action between Clarion and Slippery Rock can be heard on the Golden Eagle radio network, which includes WCCR-FM, 92.7 in Clarion and WKQW-FM, 96.3 in Oil City, as well as on the internet at Redzonemedia.com with Mike Kalinowski providing the play by play and Joe Lodanosky offering color commentary.

CLARION 7-2; 4-2 IN WEST UNDER COACH CHRIS WEIBEL

Clarion has lost two consecutive games after jumping out to a 7- 0 start in 2015. Last week Clarion led IUP at halftime 14-13, but eventually lost 28-14. Two weeks ago the Eagles lost at Cal by a 42-28 margin. Six costly interceptions were the difference in a game that Clarion outgained the Vulcans 495 – 405 in a constant rain.

Three weeks ago Clarion ran up a school record 676 yards of total offense in the game, including 432 passing yards by Connor Simmons and 309 all-purpose yards by Delrece Williams, in the Eagles 44-29 win over Seton Hill. Four weeks ago Clarion topped Edinboro on the road 36-23, and over a month ago bested Mercyhurst 41-27 on Homecoming. Simmons passed for 441 yards and 3 td's, plus ran for 2 td's in the win. Clarion opened West play with a stunning 47-31 win at Gannon, a team that was the pre-season pick to win the West. In that game Connor Simmons passed for 350 yards and 4 td's, with all four td passes going to Matt Lehman. Seven weeks ago Clarion jumped out to a 31-6 halftime advantage against Cheyney and rolled to a 59-6 win. The 53-point winning margin was the third highest in Golden Eagle football history. In week two the Eagles defeated Millersville 27-21 after getting out to a 20-7 halftime lead. The Eagles opened 2015 with an impressive 40-13 win at Lock Haven.

Clarion's 7-0 start – was its best since Gene Sobolewski was the head coach in 1983 and the Eagles opened the year 7-0 and went on to win the PSAC Championship 27-14 over East Stroudsburg in Hershey. That team finished 9-2.

SLIPPERY ROCK 8-1 OVERALL & 5-1 IN PSAC-WEST

Dr. George Mihalik is in his 28th season as SRU's head coach and has led his charges to an 8-1 overall record this year and a 5-1 mark in the PSAC-West. The Rock opened the season with a 39-13 win over New Haven, a 34-9 win over East Stroudsburg and a 75-0 win over Millersville. The only blemish this year was a 41-38 loss at Seton Hill. Rthe Rock followed with wins over Gannon (41-14), California (56-21), Mercyhurst (35-24), IUP (40-39) and Edinboro (52-10).

Mihalik has a career record at SR of 193-110-4 coming into this week. Slippery Rock won the PSAC-West and the PSAC Title a year ago and earned an NCAA D-II Playoff spot for the fifth time. In 2013 SR won the West and lost the PSAC title game, but qualified for the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The Rock has won or shared first in the PSAC-West seven times including 1997-2000, 2011, 2013 and 2014.

SR LEADS OVERALL SERIES 46-24-3/5-0 IN "MILK JUG GAME"

Clarion and Slippery Rock started a new tradition in 2010 when it adopted "The Milk Jug Game" and added to the rivalry between the two schools. "The Milk Jug" is a traveling trophy, awarded immediately after the game to the head coach and players of the winning team. That school has the "Jug" for a year and brings the trophy to the next game site, where it will be displayed for presentation following the next game.

Half of the "Milk Jug" is gold with a blue "C" for Clarion, and the other half is white with a green "S" for Slippery Rock. The winning school will post the year and score on their side of the jug after each game.

Slippery Rock has won all five "Milk Jug" games. Last year the game was close at halftime (17-8), but SR went on to win 45-8. In 2013 Slippery Rock defeated Clarion 34-13, while three years ago SR held on to defeat Clarion 28-20 at Memorial Stadium. The 2011 contest saw Slippery Rock defeat Clarion 27-13 at the Rock. The inaugural game in 2010 saw SR placekicker Kurt Brackman boot a 32 yard field goal with 1:41 to play to send the Rock to a 16-13 win over Clarion at Memorial Stadium.

Slippery Rock leads the series between the two schools by a 46-24-3 margin in games dating back to 1928. SR has won five straight in the series. Clarion last won in 2009 by a 27-10 margin at Slippery Rock. SR won the five previous meetings including a 49-14 win in 2008 at Clarion, a 41-18 win at Slippery Rock in 2007, a 31-7 win at Clarion in 2006, a 28-10 victory in 2005 and a 31-14 win in 2004. Clarion won the 2003 meeting by a narrow 19-17 final. SR has won 11 of the last 13 meetings and 18 of the last 23 dating back to 1992. The five Clarion wins came in 1992 (49-37), 1993 (29-24), 1996 (54-28), 2003 (19-17) and 2009 (27-10). SR wins were 41-17 in 1995, 28-7 in 1997, 28-14 in 1998, 45-7 in 1999, 27-14 in 2000, 33-24 in 2001, 21-14 in 2002, 2004-2008, 2010 -2014.

He has caught 55 passes for 835 yards and 13 td's. Matt's 13 td catches have him tied with the all-time single season record holder Alvin Slaughter who had 13 td catches in 1998. He needs 165 receiving yards to reach 1,000. Only 2 receivers have reached that level at Clarion – Alvin Slaughter (1,369 – 1998) and Bob Green (1,018 – 1984). In 2014 he grabbed 25 passes for 540 yards and 2 td's and latched onto 13 passes for 159 yards and 1 td in 2013. He has 93 career catches for 1,534 yards and 16 td's.
