Scouting the Fighting Scots
Edinboro is 2-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in PSAC West play, one year after going 9-2 under then-head coach Justin Lustig.  The Fighting Scots have home wins over Lock Haven and Lake Erie to their credit in 2017, with losses coming on the road at West Chester and IUP.

Ta'Nauz Gregory is averaging 144.8 all-purpose yards per game and is a dangerous weapon receivng the football as well as in the return game.  Jake Sisson is averaging 253.8 passing yards per game but has 12 interceptions compared to nine touchdowns.  Defensively the Fighting Scots are averaging 7.8 tackles for loss and has forced nine interceptions, including five by Zuril Hendrick.

Series History
This will be just the 88th meeting between Clarion and Edinboro, with the Fighting Scots holding a 45-40-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Golden Eagles. This is the oldest PSAC rivalry in the books for Clarion, as it goes back to the Golden Eagles' second season as a varsity team.

Last year's contest was lopsided towards the Fighting Scots, who won 62-14 at Memorial Stadium during Clarion's homecoming.  The lone Clarion scores came from Delrece Williams, who rushed for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Kyle Evans had five catches for 89 yards.

About the Coach
Chris Weibel enters his third season as the program's head coach after spending many of the previous years as an assistant.  Weibel has an overall record of 11-15 at Clarion, including a 7-8 record in PSAC West play.  A 2010 inductee into the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame, Weibel graduated with every major Clarion passing record to his credit.

Last Week
Quarterback Asiantii Woulard ran for one touchdown, ran for another, and hauled in a two-point conversion, but the Clarion football team lost a 21-18 nail-biter to Mercyhurst in the opening game of PSAC West play.

Woulard completed 13-of-30 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown, including the score that would pull Clarion to within three points with 7:30 left to go in regulation.  Woulard bought time with his feet and hit Greg Leonard with a 39-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-16, and then caught a two-point conversion from Mason Standard to make it a three-point game.

The Golden Eagles got the ball back on their own 42-yard-line with 3:52 left to go and moved it to just outside the red zone.  The Lakers ended the comeback threat on an interception by Emmanuel McDowell, who returned the pick to his own 37-yard-line to ice the game.

Weibel Names Captains
Head coach Chris Weibel named his two offensive and two defensive captains for the 2017 on Saturday, Aug. 26.  Quarterback Asiantii Woulard and offensive lineman Zack Morris will represent the offense, while defensive back Colton McKay and linebacker Avery Howsare represent the defense.

Big Play Greg
Sophomore receiver Greg Leonard shattered his previous career-highs in catches and receiving yards against Shippensburg, finishing with seven grabs for 157 yards against the Red Raiders on Saturday.

Leonard has 12 catches for 274 yards and two touchdowns so far this year, and leads the team with an average of 22.8 yards per reception.  That average ranks third in the PSAC, and second-best among players with 10 or more catches this year.

Ground Game Picking Up Steam
Clarion had its best running performance to date in the game against Mercyhurst, totaling 141 yards on the ground against the Lakers.  Freshman Mylique McGriff led the way with 13 carries for 66 yards, an average of 5.1 yards per carry.  Kyle Evans chipped in 50 yards on 14 carries.

Woulard Makes His Move
Asiantii Woulard also showed more propensity to run the football against the Lakers, with the junior quarterback notching a number of big gains on the ground.  Woulard took off running six times for 50 total yards against Mercyhurst, with five of his six runs going for Clarion first downs.  Included in that total was a 10-yard rush on a quarterback draw that saw him reach the endzone for his first career rushing touchdown.

Clarion Picked Seventh in Preseason Poll
In a coaches' poll before the start of the year, Clarion was predicted to finish seventh in the PSAC West division in 2017.

1) IUP (6)
2) California (2)
3) Slippery Rock
4) Edinboro
5) Gannon

Jack of All Trades
Running back Kyle Evans is once again showing his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game.  He is averaging 146.5 all-purpose yards per game, the fourth-best average in the PSAC to date.

Field Flipper
New kicker/punter James Metzgar has acquitted himself quite well in his new roles this year, proving dependable both in putting the ball through the upright as well as pinning the opponent deep.  Metzgar is second in the PSAC with 10 punts downed inside opposing 20-yard-lines while kicking just two touchbacks in a leage-high 32 attempts.  He has three punts of 50+ yards, including the longest in the PSAC to date with a 63-yard bomb against Shippensburg.

As far as kicking is concerned, he is 3-for-3 this year with a long boot of 38 yards against Mercyhurst.

Immediate Impact
Transfer defensive lineman Alec Heldreth has already made an impact on the Golden Eagle defense, providing another talented defender to what was already a strong group.  Through three games Heldreth has 19 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery.

On the Road Again
Clarion will play three straight games away from home to end the season, starting with an Oct. 28 showdown at Slippery Rock.  They then travel to take on Gannon and West Chester, respectively, to close out the slate.

Lights, Camera, Action!
Clarion University will continue its fruitful partnership with the Pennsylvania Sports Fever Television Network in 2017, with two contests – 9/9 vs. Bloomsburg and 9/30 at Edinboro – airing live on affiliates across the state of Pennsylvania and made available to millions in the Keystone State.  The selected games will also be streamed on ESPN3 via the Watch ESPN app.

Eagle Media to Stream Clarion Home Games
In a joint venture between Eagle Media Productions and the athletic department, all Clarion home football games in 2017 will be available via free video streaming.  Viewers will be able to access the video streams via the schedule page on ClarionGoldenEagles.com.

What's Next
The Golden Eagles return home for a Homecoming clash against Seton Hill.  They will also take time to honor the 40th anniversary of the legendary 1977 Golden Eagle football team in a pregame ceremony.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
