EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle men's basketball team opened up conference action on the road on Friday night, falling by an 89-44 score to East Stroudsburg at Koehler Fieldhouse. Clarion (2-3, 0-1 PSAC) will resume action tomorrow night when they take on Kutztown.
Â
Mekhi Reynolds continued his hot streak to open the season, scoring a team-high 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field.
Gerald Jarmon was held in check by the Warriors, with the junior guard scoring just nine points. Freshmen
Fray Nguimbi and
Jihad Simpson tied for the team-high with seven rebounds apiece.
Â
The biggest difference in the game came as a result of turnovers. East Stroudsburg forced the Golden Eagles into 27 turnovers and scored 37 points off those takeaways. Going hand-in-hand with that were the 16 fast break points scored by the Warriors.
Â
The Warriors opened up the game on a 10-0 run, with
Cam Kearney getting the Golden Eagles on the board with a pair of free throws at the 15:13 mark of the first half. Reynolds cut it to 17-8 midway through the half, pulling in an offensive rebound and laying it in to make it a nine-point game.
Madior Seye made a midrange jumper at the 8:01 mark of the half, scoring after
Justice Easter stole the ball from Mike Millsip to cut it to 21-10.
Â
East Stroudsburg kept pushing that lead higher and higher, though, taking a 37-13 lead with 1:10 left to go in the first half. Shamir Johnson made it a 25-point deficit at the end of the period, scoring just after Jarmon made a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to make it 41-16 at the half. Nguimbi cut the deficit to 43-20 with a fastbreak dunk at the 18:41 mark of the second half, taking a feed from Reynolds and throwing it down to make it 43-20.
Â
That would be as close as the Golden Eagles got, though, as East Stroudsburg continued to increase the lead. It eventually became a 40-point game midway through the half, and it stayed roughly at that deficit the rest of the way.
