The Clarion Perspective

Men's Swimming & Diving: In Spring 2020, Connor Cary burst onto the scene by winning PSAC Freshman of the Year honors. In 2021, he was named the top performer at the conference championships after winning the 200 IM, the 200 Fly and the 100 Fly, breaking the school record in the 100 Fly in the process with a time of 48.98. Now a junior, Cary will try to make the next leap in his career by securing himself a spot in the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in March.

Cary is currently penciled in as the conference's top seed in each of those three events, owning NCAA "B" cuts in all three. All three of those marks came at the Zippy Invitational hosted by Akron, where Cary enjoyed a dominant weekend. The junior broke Steve Darby's 28-year-old record in the 200 Fly with a 1:48.04, his own record in the 100 Fly with a time of 48.45, and Ben Spencer's record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.30. He also helped the 200 and 400 Medley Relay teams break program records that same weekend.

He's hardly alone in being favored among the conference's best at the championship meet. In fact, freshman teammate David Bocci ranks just behind him in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:49.60 that is still nearly two seconds faster than the third place entry, Bloomsburg's Nick Fiddler. Bocci also enters this weekend with the seventh-best time in the 100 Fly, with a time of 49.88. Classmate Mason Irwin will contend for the title in the 400 IM, with his season-best time of 4:01.63 ranking second in the conference this year. Upperclassmen such as Trent Napholz, Ty Rabenstein, Paul Flowers, Aidan Mohren and others are also expected to produce scads of points for the Golden Eagles, who haven't finished in the top-three at the conference meet since 2017.

Women's Swimming & Diving: Where the Clarion women will likely excel in 2022 will be in the events led by veterans of conference championships past, with some of the year's top performances coming from the upperclassmen. Sydney Davidson will be one to watch out for, as the junior enters the week with the conference's third-best time in the 100 Breaststroke. That was an NCAA "B" cut of 1:03.76 set back at the Zippy Invitational in December. Other upperclassmen, such as Steph Setar (6th - 100 Back - 58.19), Autumn Fortney (4th - 100 Fly - 56.53) and Corina Paszek (8th - 200 IM - 2:09.99), will try to step up this week.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are a number of freshmen looking to score points in their first experience in York. Hannah Greenway owns an NCAA "B" cut in the 50 Free and enters the weekend with the fifth-best time in the conference in the event, while classmate Jordan Kutchak has the league's fourth-best time in the 200 Free (1:54.28) entering this week's action. Another name to watch is breaststroke specialist Tidawee Srun, who checks in at fifth in the 200 Breaststroke (2:2247) and is just one spot out of the top-eight in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.89).
