FROSTBURG, Md. - Traveling south to Maryland for a midweek non-conference single nine inning game, the Clarion baseball team fell to Frostburg State after late game heroics from the Bobcats, 8-7. Clarion (4-15) will travel to Johnstown to take on Pitt-Johnstown for two games of a four game series on Saturday, April 2. First pitch from Point Stadium is scheduled for 1 pm with game two to follow immediately after.Â
Frostburg State 8, Clarion 7
Recap: Clarion scored seven runs on seven hits and two Frostburg State errors, leading most of the game against former head coach Anthony Williams and the Bobcats.Â
Clarion jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after
Kasey Shughart lead the inning off with a double and stole second base in a matter of a few pitches.
Caden Contant followed that up with a walk to put runners on first and second base and after a sac bunt from
Scott McManamon advanced the runners, the Golden Eagles had two runners in scoring position with one out.Â
Daren Byers flied out to left field to score Shughart from third to make the score 1-0 as Clarion continued to put the pressure on with a walk from
Sam Economy to keep multiple runners on base.Â
Dan Fox singled to center field to score Contant to plate Clarion's second run to make the score 2-0. Frostburg State answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame to pull back within one, and took the lead in the bottom of the third after scoring three runs on one hit, a homerun to left field, and one error.Â
With the score 4-2, Clarion battled back, scoring four runs on three hits. Fox walked to start the inning and scored after
Lenny Piccini singled to left field to make the score 4-3.
Griffin Snyder followed that up with a walk of his own, and Shughart tacked on a single to right field, and Contant drove in both Piccini and Snyder with a single to right field, making the score 5-4.Â
McManamon forced a hard play as a fielder's choice allowed Shugart to score as Clarion took the lead 6-4 in the top of the fourth inning.Â
Clarion added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, to maker the score 7-4, after a Fox single scored
Nate Petke who reached on an error by the Bobcat catcher.Â
The score remained locked at 7-4 until the bottom of the ninth when Frostburg State added four runs on four hits. A familiar face, Bryce Jackson, former Golden Eagle, singled down the right field line to score the game winning run as Clarion fell 8-7 in walk off fashion.Â
Michael Proios got the start for Clarion on the mound, tossing 4.0 complete innings, allowing just four runs on two hits, while striking out four and walking three.Â
Fox and Contant both had two hits for Clarion as Contant drove in a team high two RBI's
