INDIANA, Pa. -- The Golden Eagle baseball team concluded their 2022 season on Sunday afternoon, with Clarion falling by scores of 1-0 and 7-2 to IUP at Dougherty Field in Indiana.
Game 1 – IUP 1, Clarion 0
Recap: The first half of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel that concluded after just 90 minutes, with the teams recording just three total hits between the two of them. The lone run for either side came in the bottom of the first inning, with Nick Hess driving in Harrison Pontoli on a sacrifice fly for an unearned run against Trevor McGee. McGee was masterful after that, allowing just one more runner to reach scoring position for the rest of the game.
Unfortunately for Clarion, IUP starter Jimmy Tooley was dialed in from the get-go. He held the Golden Eagles hitless through six innings, and in fact only three Clarion batters – Matt Privette, Griffin Snyder and Caden Contant – even reached base in that span.
Brett Pitzer broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, driving a single to left field past the outstretched glove of shortstop Markus Cestra. However, the Golden Eagles were unable to complete the comeback in game one.
Game 2 – IUP 7, Clarion 2
Recap: IUP took advantage of one rough inning from pitcher Reilly Shafer, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning to open up a 6-0 lead on the Golden Eagles. The advantage reached 7-0 before Clarion rallied back for two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Nate Petke started things off by drawing a leadoff walk, and Snyder drew a free pass in the next plate appearance to put runners on first and second. The two took off on a wild pitch by pitcher Sean Furlong to reach scoring position, and senior outfielder Matt Privette did the rest, driving a two-run single to left field to bring them both home.
The rally did not continue, though, as Privette was caught attempting to steal second base. Kasey Shughart and Contant were both retired by Furlong to end the inning and the threat.
