WEST CHESTER, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle football team wrapped their 2023 season on the road on Saturday afternoon, falling in the finale to West Chester by a 34-7 score. Clarion had several opportunities to stick with the Golden Rams early in the game but were stymied by miscues in the first half.
Â
Opportunities were there in the first half for Clarion, who saw five of their first six possessions breach West Chester territory. They were unable to crack the Golden Ram defense, though, turning the ball over twice in that span and seeing other drives halted by errors.
Â
The first Clarion offensive drive was just one such occurrence.
Will Alexander connected on a long pass play to
Nick Maher, with the latter gaining 33 yards on 3
rd-and-5 to put Clarion on West Chester's side of the field.
Corahn Alleyne rushed for six yards on first down but the Golden Rams buckled down on the next play, with Izaiah McPherson picking off Alexander and setting up a scoring drive for his team.
Â
The Golden Eagles put themselves in position to take advantage of a turnover themselves early in the second quarter. The Golden Rams faced a 3
rd-and-17 deep in their own territory when
Shane Kemper picked off a pass from Ethan Kohler, taking it 27 yards down to the 13-yard line. They were unable to make West Chester pay, though, as
Ty Hurst was hit as he threw on the first play of the drive and was picked off at the goal line.
Â
West Chester led 17-0 at the half and 24-0 early in the third quarter before the Golden Eagles got onto the scoreboard, on the back of two big passing plays. Facing first down from his own 42-yard line, Alexander lobbed a beauty of a deep ball to
Ray Jackson down the left side, picking up 38 yards and setting up the Golden Eagles on the 25-yard line. Just a few plays later Alexander delivered a strike to
Corahn Alleyne down the seam, placing the ball perfectly between defenders and giving Alleyne his fourth receiving touchdown of the season.
Â
The Golden Rams kicked a field goal before the end of the third quarter and added another touchdown early in the fourth, this time a three-yard touchdown run from Dayshawn Jacobs. Alexander again led the Golden Eagles on a long drive, this time getting into the red zone before being picked off by Sterlen Barr near the goal line.
Â
Kareem Hamdan finished the game with 12 total tackles and a quarterback hurry while
Connor Lyczek added five tackles and a sack.
