CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle women's tennis team opened their 2023-24 season on Thursday afternoon but came out on the wrong end of the decision, falling by a 6-1 score to Westminster at Campbell Courts.
The day began with a competitive doubles session, as both of Clarion's doubles pairings held tough with their Titan counterparts. The duo of
Alexis Strouse and
Davan Lion hung around with a couple of games late in the set, but the Titans got out to an early lead and held on for the 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles saw the pair of
Alyson Fisher and
Josie Beckerleg take a couple of games from Emma Overlingas and Caroline Fox, but the Titans took that match 6-3 as well to take the doubles point.
Strouse picked up a win for the Golden Eagles in singles play, rebounding from a first set loss to Christine Rossi to win a third set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. Rossi won a close 7-5 decision in the first set but Strouse rebounded with a better effort in the second set, winning that one 6-2 to force a third. The Golden Eagle senior cruised in that frame, winning by a 10-4 score for the win.
The No. 1 singles match was another competitive battle, though the Titans emerged victorious there. Lion pushed Gia Francisco to a 7-5 score in the first set, but Francisco took the second by a 6-2 score to take the bout. Westminster was successful in the other three singles matches contested, giving them the team win.Â
