CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles volleyball team got off to a strong start, but Clarion watched a two-set lead evaporate as Edinboro picked up a 3-2 (25-14, 25-15, 21-25, 23-25, 14-16) win at Tippin Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
Â
Clarion won the first two sets handily and looked perhaps to be making their way toward a convincing conference win at home. However, the Fighting Scots pushed back and won three consecutive close sets, edging out the Golden Eagles for the team win.
Â
Cassidy Snider logged a match-high 26 kills and a .288 attack percentage, and also finished with 15 digs for a double-double. The offensive revelation of the night was
Emily Klopp, who showed up with 12 kills and a .385 attack percentage. The redshirt freshman opposite also kicked in three digs and two blocks.
Raegan Stader also recorded 12 kills, while
Haley Fledderjohann had a match-high 20 digs.
Â
The Golden Eagles started out hot, at one point scoring eight straight points to build a significant lead. The pairing of
Olivia Ishmael and Snider blocked Jessica Hardin to make it 10-8, Snider followed up with back-to-back kills, and setter
Marisa Markou dealt two aces to conclude the run and make it 15-8. Clarion won the race to 20 points when Fledderjohann added an ace of her own, doubling up the Fighting Scots at 20-10, and a kill by Snider wrapped the set at 25-14.
Â
Clarion fought off a significant Edinboro rally in the second set, eventually pulling away and winning the set on a string of three blocks on four points. Ishmael solo-blocked Faith Schneider to make it 22-15, then teamed with Klopp and Stader on the final two points respectively to make it a 25-15 set win. The Fighting Scots got one back in the third set, winning 25-21, and then a battle ensued in the fourth set to extend the match. Clarion led 20-18 and 21-20, but Edinboro rallied with three straight points to take a 23-21 lead. That eventually led to a 25-23 set win, and a decisive fifth set.
Â
The Golden Eagles rallied from a 7-4 fifth set deficit, scoring four straight points to flip the court. The teams traded points from there, with Clarion tying the score at 14 before back-to-back kills by Kasey Smith wrapped the match.
