SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles soccer team put up a game effort against one of the top teams in the PSAC West division, but a pair of impressive goals by Sydney Patrick put Slippery Rock over Clarion by a 2-0 score on Saturday.
Â
The Rock were the more dominant team in terms of possession and shots, out-shooting the Golden Eagles 26-4 overall and by a 14-3 margin in shots on net. Ironically, it was two odd-angle shots by Patrick that proved to be the difference, as she struck twice in the first half for all the offense her team needed.
Â
The first goal came in the 19
th minute, after
Nicole Brown was whistled for a foul deep in Clarion's end of the field. The ball was spotted for a free kick slightly off the goal line and near the left corner. Patrick bent a shot toward the net that may have ricocheted off another player and past goalkeeper
Sage Sherk, giving the Rock a 1-0 lead. Slippery Rock's second tally came in the 29
th minute, on one of their 10 corner kicks in the first half. Patrick struck again, this time bending shot from the left corner with her right foot and directly into the net for an Olimpico goal.
Â
Clarion did not allow the Rock to build onto their lead any further, though, and played them evenly in the second half to attempt a comeback. Just two minutes into the second half the Golden Eagles had a scoring opportunity, as
Ciara DiMauro got loose on a run with the ball down the left side. She fired a hard, accurate shot that was nonetheless stopped by Leah Allman along the ground. Sherk stopped a barrage of shots in the 54
th minute, keeping her side in the action.
Â
Marisa Colondrillo had what may have been the best scoring chance of the day for the Golden Eagles, picking up a loose ball and rushing toward the defense in the 74
th minute. She dribbled the ball downfield and caught a defender flatfooted, giving her a one-on-one chance against Allman, but Allman stopped her shot from distance. DiMauro missed out on another breakaway opportunity in the 77
th minute as the Rock held on for the win.
