FROSTBURG, Md. --- The Golden Eagles continued their torrid start to the season with a resounding 83-67 victory. After a back-and-forth start to the game, Clarion pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 43-29 and shooting 59.1% from the field. This marks the best start to the regular season since the 2010-11 campaign, when the Golden Eagles began the season 9-0.
Gavin Cote paced the Golden Eagles with a career-high 28 points, including nine three-pointers, which ties the program record for most three-pointers made in a single game. Cote made his impact felt early, scoring 21 of the Golden Eagles' first 23 points. Cam Kearney added 23 points, 13 of which came from the charity stripe, and secured nine rebounds on the evening.
The Frostburg State duo of Eric Sondberg and Jaden Baker opened the game by scoring 17 of the Bobcats' first 20 points, giving Frostburg an early 17-3 lead. Clarion responded with an 11-1 run over the next 3:51, narrowing the Bobcat advantage to 19-17 with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Cote scored nine quick points, all from behind the arc, and Traden Gray added a dunk, three rebounds, including an offensive rebound that directly led to a Cote basket.
Clarion completed the comeback when Josiah Dow hit a three-pointer at 6:49 to tie the game. Jeremy Thomas II gave the Golden Eagles their first lead on the next possession, finishing a layup. Dow hit another three-pointer, and Kearney added a free throw, giving Clarion a 40-38 lead heading into halftime.
The teams traded baskets in the second half, with the score remaining close. However, back-to-back baskets from Kearney and Justice Easter extended Clarion's lead to three. The Golden Eagles then went on a 9-0 run, capped by a basket from Trey Nelson, who also assisted on another basket and grabbed an offensive rebound, helping extend the Clarion lead to 52-48 with just over 13 minutes remaining. Nelson continues to provide a well-rounded game finishing with 11 points, six assists, and three rebounds on the night.
Kearney went on a seven-point scoring burst to put the game out of reach with six minutes remaining. He converted a tough and-1 layup, fighting through the Bobcats' defense to give the Golden Eagles a double-digit lead. Clarion maintained their advantage, which ballooned to as much as 21 points late in the game.
