NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle tennis team continued their busy stretch of matches to kick off the spring season, falling by an 8-1 score to Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The highlight of the day came in the singles session, where
Taelyn Thomas won her first career match in exciting fashion. Competing in the No. 6 singles match, Thomas took on the Titans' Taylor Dlugozima, winning a close first set by a 6-4 score. Dlugozima rallied to force a 6-6 score in the second set, sending the set to a tiebreaker. Thomas was able to push back herself and win the tiebreaker, outscoring her 7-3 to claim the singles win.
Â
Westminster won the other seven matches contested on Tuesday, but the final score did not necessarily indicate the competitiveness of the match. In particular,
Charlie Allison and
Stephanie Juarez Murguia played tight matches in the Nos. 4 and 5 singles matches. Both lost by identical scores to Emma Overlingas and Grace Askey respectively, pushing their opponents in the second set but falling 6-3, 7-5.
Josie Beckerleg also played a highly competitive singles match, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Christine Rossi.
Â
In the doubles session, the duo of Beckerleg and
Davan Lion played a tight match against Rossi and Gia Francisco, falling 8-4 in the No. 1 match. Dlugozima and Overlingas beat Juarez and Thomas in the No. 3 doubles match by an 8-3 score, and the duo of Ryleigh Valone and Askey won the No. 2 match by an 8-0 score for the sweep.
