CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Findlay squad in the final match of the 2024 Tony Banner Memorial Tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 (18-25, 11-25, 20-25) to the Oilers in Tippin Gymnasium.
Findlay had things firing on all cylinders offensively, with the Oilers hitting .400 on 80 attempts. Comparatively, they held the Golden Eagles to a .179 attack percentage, largely because of their ability to control the match via the serve. The Oilers recorded nine service aces and limited Clarion's ability to get into a rhythm.
The highlight of the afternoon for the Golden Eagles came late in the third set, when
Cassidy Snider moved herself further into rarefied company in the program's record books. Her final kill of the afternoon was the 1,500
th of her career, making her just the third player in program history to crack the 1,500-kill mark. Earlier in the set she surpassed Kellie Bartman (1,497 kills) for third on the program's career kills list. Snider finished with a match-high 14 kills.
The Oilers got out to an 18-9 lead in the first set but Clarion chipped away and made a game of that frame as time went on. Snider made it 21-15 when she finished three out of four points with a kill, and she later dealt up a service ace off the left hand of Hannah Miller to cut the deficit to 22-18. Miller responded with a kill coming out of a timeout, and then the duo of Alana Pohlman and Stephanie Smith forced set point with a block. That led to a Golden Eagles attack error to make it 25-18.
In the second set Findlay embarked on a 7-1 run midway through the game to take a 22-9 lead, and Miller eventually finished off the set win with a kill at 25-11. The Golden Eagles pushed back at the start of the third, with Snider and
Savannah Taosoga logging kills early. Kearney and
Kylie Barto combined for a block of Miller to briefly give Clarion a 7-6 lead, but the Oilers responded with three straight points to take the lead for good. The Golden Eagles went on a 3-0 run late to make it 22-19, with
Olivia Ishmael and
Karlee Berchtold contributing kills, before the Oilers finished off the win.
