Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Finishes 3-1 in Wilson

WILSON, N.C. --- The Golden Eagles baseball team wrapped a strong weekend in the South on Saturday, winning games against West Virginia State and Jefferson to close out a four-game swing in Wilson. Clarion beat the Yellow Jackets 12-1 in the early game to sweep the series with them, and then rallied for a 7-4 win against the Rams to complete a weekend split.

Clarion 12, West Virginia State 1

RECAP:
Offensive outbursts in the third and fifth innings fueled the early win over the Yellow Jackets, with Clarion scoring four runs apiece in those innings. In the third, Randy Carlo led off with a talk, followed by back-to-back singles from Caden Contant and Brody Hinkle that loaded the bases. Ethan Giangiulio drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-0, and Ethan McNally smacked a double to center field to up the lead to five runs. He later scored on an error at shortstop, giving Clarion a 6-0 edge.

The Golden Eagles made that lead nearly insurmountable in the fifth inning when they strung together three straight RBI doubles, with Griffin Snyder, Cole Yeager and Randy Carlo all adding two-base knocks to make it 10-0. Hinkle singled Carlo home with two outs to give Clarion an 11-0 lead.

As effective as the Clarion offense was – 12 runs on 14 hits – the pitching was just as good. Carter Barrett gave the Golden Eagles six shutout innings of work, striking out eight batters in the process of earning his first Clarion win. Jack Edner came in for a solid inning of relief work, allowing one run.

Hurda put the cherry on top of the win, hitting a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning. Snyder went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run and an RBI, while Carlo went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. McNally was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Clarion 7, Jefferson 4

RECAP: One night after suffering a loss to the Rams on the same field, the Golden Eagles beat Jefferson by scoring five combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings. In fact, all seven runs scored by Clarion came in the final three innings they went to the plate, including a four-spot in the bottom of the eighth to make it 7-4.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Clarion got things going when Cole Yeager hit a double to right field to bring Griffin Snyder home, slicing the lead to just one run. After a shutout inning of relief work from Aiden Hartle the Golden Eagles went back to work
in the eighth, starting with a leadoff hit-by-pitch for Brody Hinkle and a single by Caden Contant. Jaxson Wood reached on an error on his sac bunt attempt, loading the bases for Tyson Gill, who also took advantage of an error by the shortstop to reach. Hinkle and Contant scored to make it 5-4, and Snyder hit a double to left field to clear the bases and make it 7-4.

Hartle made quick work of the Rams in the top of the ninth inning, striking out two and inducing a flyout to end the game. He earned the win with two innings of shutout relief.

Hinkle put Clarion on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, erasing what had been a 2-0 deficit with a two-run home run that scored Carlo and evened the game up. Jefferson scored twice in the top of the seventh to retake the two-run lead.
