GREENSBURG, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles women's basketball team kept pace with their nationally ranked opponent in the first half on Monday evening, but Clarion ran out of steam against #18/20 Seton Hill as the Griffins won 99-73 in the PSAC Tournament First Round game.Â
Â
With two of the highest-scoring teams in the PSAC this season, the action in the first half was fast and furious as both sides were content to let the game turn into a track meet. Clarion was going step for step and bucket for bucket with the Griffins for much of the first half, but Seton Hill exploded for a 27-8 scoring advantage in the third quarter to set the outcome out of question.Â
Â
Malayziah Etheredge and
Autumn Taylor were two players who got the fire going against the Griffins, with the two both on fire in the first half. Taylor tied the game high by scoring 20 points, with most of that damage coming in the first half, while Etheredge recorded a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.Â
Â
Both teams were determined to drive their way to the hoop in the first quarter, as evidenced by a number of and-one situations for both teams. Taylor converted one of those at the 4:32 mark, cutting the Griffins' lead to 19-15, and she scored a second chance bucket just seconds later after
DayLynn Thornton's offensive rebound to make it a two-point game. The first big Seton Hill run of the game ensued thereafter, with the Griffins scoring 13 of the next 18 points to go ahead 32-22.Â
Â
Thornton cut the lead down to single digits midway through the second quarter, scoring through contact on the fast break to make it 43-34. She made the subsequent free throw to make it an eight-point game. Etheredge made a bucket down the stretch in the second quarter to make it a 10-point game, and
Arianna Seitz scored early in the third quarter to keep it such, but the Griffins made their move and ran away with the result.Â
