CLARION FB LOSES 41-13 AT BLOOMSBURG

Clarion qb Eric Coxon scored on a 1-yard run capping a 75-yard opening drive to lead 7-0, but Bloomsburg tied the game on its first play from scrimmage on a 66-yard td pass from and Pat Carey to Cory Stiger and the Huskies roared back in the third quarter to win a convincing 41-13 decision over the Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
 
Held at BU's Redman Stadium, 3,378 fans watched Bloomsburg freshman tailback Franklyn Quiteh gallop for 218 yards and 2 td's on only 15 carries to pace a Bloomsburg running attack that rushed for a total of 344 yards and 4 td's on the day.
 
Clarion jumped out to a 7-0 lead when the Eagles drove 75-yards in 11 plays to find paydirt. QB Eric Coxon had two big runs on the first drive, including a 28-yarder to the Bloom 24, and a ten yard run to the Husky 13. All-America running back Alfonso Hoggard notched a 12-yard run to the 1, then Coxon scored on a sneak at 9:26 and the Eagles led 7-0.
 
On its first play from the 34-yard line, Bloomsburg qb Pat Carey hit Cory Stiger on a perfecct post-pattern for a 66-yard td play to tie the game at 7-7.
 
The Eagles drove the pigskin on its next possession from its own 32 to the Bloom 15 in only 4 plays, but a low snap on first down that Coxon couldn't handle ended up as a fumble that was recovered by Bloom's Mike Varanavage at the Bloom 24 ending a good scoring threat.
 
The Huskies took the lead for good (14-7) when Matt Cox scored on an 11-yard run at 14:09 of the second quarter, capping a 72-yard – three-play drive.
 
Clarion had an opportunity to potentially tie the game just before halftime, but came up empty. The Eagles drove from their own 28 to the Bloomsburg 1 and had second and goal. From the shotgun, Hoggard took two deep handoffs but lost a yard and then was stopped for no gain, bringing up fourth down. Clarion called timeout with 1.5 seconds left in the half and lined up for a 19-yard field goal, but the attempt was blocked by Wallace Jamison preserving Bloom's 14-7 halftime lead.
 
Clarion opened the second half narrowing the deficit to 14-10 on a 27-yard field goal from Robert Mamula at 8:59 of the third. The Eagles once again had the ball on the BU 10 yard line, but couldn't get any closer and settled for the field goal.
 
Husky qb Pat Carey hit Chris Tressler in the back of the endzone for an 8-yard td pass for a 21-10 lead at 7:12 of the third.
 
Bloomsburg broke the game open on its next two possessions when Franklyn Quiteh scored on runs of 45 and 68 yards giving BU a 34-10 lead.
 
Clarion drove the ball from its own 45 to the Husky 7 with a third and 2, but Hoggard was stopped for a 1-yard loss and Mamula came on to boot a 25-yard field goal to make the score 34-13.
 
Bloomsburg finished the scoring on a Codie Butler 5-yard run at 7:35 of the fourth for a 41-13 final score.
 
Clarion had 353 yards of total offense including 107 rushing yards and 246 passing yards.
 
Alfonso Hoggard was limited to 64 yards on 26 carries, and 1 catch for 13 yards.
 
Coxon completed 21 of 37 passes for 246 yards and ran for 34 yards and 1 td. Jacques Robinson caught 9 passes for 91 yards. Robinson moved into second place in school history with 178 career catches and passed former All-America tight end Tim Brown who had 169 from 1990-93. Robinson is chasing former A-A wideout Alvin Slaughter who had 195 grabs from 1995-98
 
Nick Sipes led the “D” with 9 tackles, while Chris Smeltzer had 8.
 
Bloomsburg netted 507 yards of total offense including 344 rushing and 163 passing.
 
Quiteh led the running game with 218 yards and 2 td's. QB Pat Carey completed 8 of 15 passes for 153 yards and 2 td's.
 
Clarion returns home next Saturday to host Shippensburg at Memorial Stadium in a 6pm kickoff. The Blue and Gold Pep Rally, featuring the 1980 Clarion PSAC Title Team, will begin in downtown Clarion on North 6th Avenue (by the Captain Loomis) starting at 3pm.
