(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion senior golfer
Jared Schmader (Cooperstown/Maplewood)won medalist honors at the Hal Hansen Invitational Tournament on Monday with a 36-hole total of 139, while the Golden Eagles finished second as a team.
Schmader set a Clarion University and Clarion Oaks Golf Course record on Sunday, firing a seven-under par 65 in the first round, then followed up on Monday with a two-over par 74, for a 36-hole total of five-under par 139. He took medalist honors by 5 strokes over Derek Baker of IUP who had an even par 144, and 9 shots over third place finisher Stephen Spaulding of Baldwin Wallace who had a 148.
IUP won the team title shooting a team total of 594, while Clarion was second with a 599 and Allegheny third at 610. Sixteen teams played in the event.
Also scoring for the Golden Eagles were
Ross Pringle (Jr. Titusville) who posted a 74, 79 – 153, along with teammate
Bill Stover (So. Apollo) who also had a 74, 79 – 153.
Zach Schloemer (Jr. Waynesburg/Central) was right behind with a 78, 76 – 154, and
Alex Angelone (Fr. Irwin/Penn Trafford) notched a 78, 84 – 162.
Clarion's next action will be on September 20-21 at the Atlantic Regional at River Greens Golf Club in Lafayette, Ohio.
CLARION NOTES: To shoot the school record 65, Schmader made 9 birdies on the day and two bogeys for his 7-under round of 65… He shot a three-under 33 on the front nine, then countered with a four-under 32 on the back nine. He birdied 18 to secure the record…. Schmader's 5-under par two-day score was his best ever at Clarion… In the Fall of 2002 he was four-under at Montour Heights C.C. .. He shot a school record 6-under 66, then a two-over 74 for a four-under total of 140… In the Fall of 2008 at the Cal Invite he was also 4-under at Cedar Brook – shooting a 2-under 69 and a 2-under 70 for a 2-dat total of 139… He owns the two best single day scores at Clarion now at 7 under and 6 under … Former All-American Matt Guyton had two – five-under par rounds at one tournament to post a 10-under par, two-day score – which is the best in school history … That happened in 2002.
