Patrick Graham-Murphy (Pgh- Brashear) ran for 174 yards and 1 td in his first collegiate start at running back and defensive end
Barrington Morrison (Sr. Pgh – Penn Hills) posted 2 qb sacks but it wasn't enough on Saturday night as Clarion lost a hard-fought 21-10 decision at Edinboro.
Held at Sox Harrison Stadium, Clarion dropped to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the PSAC-Western Division, while EDinboro raised its record to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the West.
Edinboro's defense was ranked #2 against the run in the PSAC allowing only 88.7 yards per game, but Graham-Murphy, normally a defensive back, was pressed into duty with both Clarion's starters,
Brandon Akins and
John Fuhrer, out with injuries. Murphy, moved to running back during practice this week, responded with an amazing effort rushing 20 times for 174 yards and 1 td.
“I thought we played hard for 60 minutes tonight and gave a very strong effort on both sides of the ball,” said Clarion head coach
Jay Foster. “ I liked the progress we showed this week. We need to make some big plays go our way when we have that opportunity and the wins will follow.”
Edinboro took the opening kickoff nd went 90 yards in 8 plays to score. QB Cody Harris scrambled to score on a 2-yard run and led 7-0 at 10:35 of the first quarter.
The Fighting Scots made it 14-0 on a 32-yard td pas from Harris to David Bostic in the left corner of the endzone with 4:08 left in the first. The td was setup when Kenny Pettis intercepted a
Ben Fiscus (So. Indiana) pass at the Clarion 36 and returned it to the Clarion 31.
Graham-Murphy had an electrifying 79-yard run bringing the Golden Eagle faithful to their feet. The Eagles had second and 8 at their own 3, when Graham-Murphy run up the middle, then broke outside the right end, after running upfield about 15 yards, he reversed his field toward the middle, then back to the right, then across the field and down the left sideline to the Scot 18. The drive was stopped, but freshman placekicker
Tyler Ruark came on and booted a 34-yard field goal to cut the Edinboro lead to 14-3 with 8:09 left in the second.
Edinboro came right back and made it 21-3 when Harris hit D'mar Jeter on a 25-yard td pass at 1:22 of the second quarter.
Clarion got right back in the game with a td drive of its own before halftime. Starting at its own 40, qb Fiscus ran down the left sideline for 11 yards, and an Edinboro personal foul for a late hit advanced the pigskin to the Scot 34. Two plays later, Fiscus ran 16 yards from the 23 to the Scot 7. Clarion false started, but a personal foul on Edinboro had Clarion first and goal at the 6. On second and goal from the 4, with 25 seconds left on the clock, Graham-Murphy rushed off left tackle and buled his way into the endzone for a Golden Eagle touchdown. Ruark's PAT with 20-seconds left before intermission made it 21-10 at halftime.
Clarion's best chance to score came on the opening drive of the third quarter. Graham-Murphy rushed three times for 25 yards and had Clarion at its own 45. Two plays later Fiscus rushed for 7 yards, and Graham-Murphy had runs of 6 and 4 yards to the Boro 38. The drive stalled, and on fourth and 10 at the Boro 38, Fiscus scrambled in the backfield, then lofted a pass to the endzone for
Rob Irwin but the pass fell incomplete.
Clarion had 272 yards of offense including 233 rushing and 39 passing. Graham-Murphy's 174 rushing yards came on 20 carries and with an average of 8.7 per carry, Fiscus ran 13 times for 61 yards and completed 3 of 15 passes for 39 yards.
Clarion All-Region defensive end
Barrington Morrison posted 7 tackles with 2 qb sacks and 3 tfkl's on the evening.
Nate Sipes led the defense with 9 stops, while Andrew PAronish and
Mike Verdun contributed 7 hits each. Clarion had 5 sacks on the night with one each from
Brian Palmiere and james Eckels and one-half each for
Braheem Foy and
Adam Bostick.
Edin boro's Harris had a strong night completing 19 of 23 passes for 203 yards and 2 td's, plus rushed for 1.
Clarion returns home next Saturday to host Gannon at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff for Family Day is at 1pm.
