MANSFIELD – The Clarion University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Mansfield Saturday losing 9-3 in the first game and 12-1 in the nightcap.
In Game One,
Josh Beimel was 3-for-3 for Clarion, while
Matt Rossi went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Clarion (2-13) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when
Scott Berkes had an RBI single and Rossi a sacrifice fly. But Mansfield quickly answered with six in the bottom of the inning all off Clarion starter and loser
Brandon Slater, who went 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits and three walks while striking out one.
Mansfield then added a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the sixth off
Mike Dunn, who pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits. He struck out one. Clarion's final run came on a Rossi groundout in the seventh.
In Game Two, Mansfield (8-3) had three separate four-run innings starting with a four-run first. The Mountaineers also had four in the fifth and four in the sixth. Clarion got its lone run in the top of the sixth when Berkes singled home
Jerico Weitzel, who had reached on a two-out error. Rossi,
Eric Grejda and Beimel also had hits in the game for the Golden Eagles.
Eric Panko took the loss going 4 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, all earned, on nine hits, three walks and a hit batter while striking out three. White, who didn't start the second game in the field, finished off on the mound going 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out one.
Clarion returns to action Friday when it hosts Mercyhurst in the PSAC West and home opening doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
