Jerico Weitzel and
Josh Beimel had three hits and
Scott Berkes pitched the final 2.1 innings to lead the Golden Eagle baseball team to an 11-8 game two win in eight innings and a split in its opening PSAC-West doubleheader against Mercyhurst on Saturday at Pullman Park in Butler. Clarion lost game one 6-1.
Clarion raised its overall record to 3-14 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC-West. Mercyhurst, ranked 30th in Division II, is now 16-6 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC-West.
In game two Mercyhurst led 2-0 entering the top of the fourth when Clarion erupted for six runs.
Weitzel reached on an error and scored on a single from Beimel.
Matt Rossi singled and
Ken Morgan then scored Beimel on a sac fly.
Chad White walked,
Dane Dobson posted an rbi single,
Mark White walked and
Nate Weiss was hit by a pitch to score White with the fourth run. Weitzel came to bat for the second time in the inning and had a two rbi single for a six-run inning.
Mercyhurst answered with three in the fourth and one in the sixth to tie the game 6-6.
Clarion took the lead in the top of the seventh when Weitzel singled and came home on Beimel's double, but the Lakers scored in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth with two outs Dobson and
Mark White walked,
Jon Roncolato banged a double to right field that scored Dobson and White. Weitzel delivered an rbi single and Beimel an rbi single to seal the win.
Beimel and Weitzel has three hits each and three rbi's in the game.
In game one Mercyhurst scored five runs in the bottom of the second on their way to a 6-1 win.
Eric Panko was the starter and loser going 2 innings and giving up 5 runs on 5 hits.
Clarion will next host Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday, March 29 at 3pm at Memorial Stadium.
