(Millersville, Pa.): Clarion opened its 2011 baseball season at Millersville on Saturday afternoon and dropped a doubleheader to the Marauders. The Golden Eagles lost game one 7-1 and game two 7-3.
Clarion lost the season opener 7-1 as the Marauders scored two in the first and three in the second off starter and loser
Gregg Bandzuh.
Kevin Gnacinski pitched two innings and yielded two runs, while
Mike Dunn pitched two scoreless innings to close the game.
The Eagles scored their only run in the top of the seventh when Dane Dobson doubled, Jon Roncolato singled and Seth Peterson, in a pinch hitting role, plated Dobson with a sacrifice fly.
In game two Clarion lost 7-3 but the game was much closer than the final. Senior
Eric Panko was the Eagle starter and yielded only one run in the first three innings. Millersville got to Panko for four runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
Clarion bounced back with three runs in the sixth to close to within 5-3.
Jerico Weitzel and Scott Berkes singled with one out. With two outs
Ken Morgan delivered a double to left center to plate Weitzel and Berkes, then
Bill Hasson's double delivered Morgan and the Eagles were within 5-3.
T.J. Anderson came on in the sixth and yielded two runs in one-third of an inning, and
Matt Warhola came on to close out the inning.
Clarion could not rally in the seventh.
The Golden Eagles are not 0-2 to start the year under fourth year head coach Mike Brown, while Millersville is 7-2.
Clarion travels to play Mount Olive on Monday at 3pm.
