ROSSI HELPS BASEBALL SPLIT WITH GANNON

Matt Rossi was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs in Game One

Game One Box Score / Game Two Box Score

ERIE – Matt Rossi went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in Game One of a PSAC West doubleheader Thursday to help the Clarion University baseball team split the twinbill with Gannon.

Thanks in part to Rossi, Clarion (6-19 overall, 4-6 PSAC West) won the first game 4-2 before dropping Game Two 3-0. The Golden Eagles were the home team in both contests.

Helping Rossi on offense in Game One was Josh Beimel, who was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Seldom-used Pat Golden picked up the win. Golden, who had pitched just 7 1/3 innings on the season coming in, started and went 5 1/3 innings allowing just two first inning runs, both earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out one.  Eric Panko came out of the bullpen to pick up his second save of the season going the final 1 2/3 innings scoreless retiring all five batters he faced including one strikeout.

Gannon (13-19, 8-10) grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs off Golden in the top of the first, but Clarion had the answer in the bottom of the inning scoring two of its own.

Beimel drew a walk to leadoff, was bunted to second by Jerico Weitzel and scored on a Rossi double. Rossi then scored on a two-out single to left by Bill Hasson.

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the third inning when Beimel led off with a single to left and Weitzel followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Rossi then singled to left giving Clarion a 3-2 lead.

Clarion tacked on a run in the fourth when Dane Dobson led off with a walk was bunted to second by Mark White and scored on a single to center by Beimel.

In Game Two, Brandon Slater pitched a solid game allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks, but Clarion's offense couldn't push a run across the board despite seven hits.

Beimel stayed hot going 2-for-3 making him 11 of 24 (.458) in his last nine games with four multiple-hit contests.

Clarion will stay in Erie overnight and play Gannon at 1 p.m. Friday in a doubleheader at Erie's Jerry Uht Park. The games will be Gannon's home contests.
