PANKO HELPS CLARION SPLIT DH WITH GANNON

Eric Panko

Game One Box Score / Game Two Box Score

ERIE – Eric Panko helped Clarion keep its playoff hopes alive throwing a six-hit complete game in Game Two of a PSAC West baseball doubleheader Friday at Gannon leading the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 win and a split in the twinbill.

After dropping Game One 6-3 at Erie's Jerry Uht Park, Clarion needed a win in Game Two. And Panko delivered allowing a run in the first inning and nothing else the rest of the way. He walked one and struck out seven.

Clarion (7-20 overall, 5-7 PSAC West) answered Gannon's run with a run of its own in the second when Scott Berkes led off with a walk was sacrificed to second by Bill Hasson and scored on an RBI single to center by Eric Grejda.

The Golden Eagles then took the lead in the third inning when Jerico Weitzel and Ken Morgan each walked after one out, and Weitzel scored on an RBI single by Matt Rossi.

Weitzel was 1-for-2 with the run scored, and Rossi and Grejda were each 1-for-3 with the RBIs accounting for all of Clarion's hits.

Gannon (14-20, 9-11) took Game One 6-3 scoring two runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings. All three Clarion runs came in the sixth.

Grejda had a hit, a run scored and an RBI in three at bats with Berkes and Morgan each going 1-for-4 with a run scored. Jon Roncolato also was 2-for-3.

Mike Dunn took the loss going four-plus innings allowing six earned runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out two. T.J. Anderson threw two scoreless innings of relief giving up two hits and a walk.

Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Monday when its hosts California in a PSAC West make-up doubleheader. The Vulcans, who swept Clarion in a doubleheader last week, are 6-7 in PSAC West play.
