MANSFIELD –
Bethany Naugle and
Autumn Rosenberg played heroes for the Clarion University women's soccer team scoring goals five minutes apart at the end of regulation and the start of overtime to help the Golden Eagles shock Mansfield 2-1 at Mansfield Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 most of the contest, Naugle forced the extra session with a goal early in the 88
th minute scoring on a breakaway off a pass from
Alyssa Katz.
“We had just put her in the game about three minutes before that and told her to use her speed,” Clarion head coach Rob Eaton said. “She was able to use that speed and score in the bottom-left corner on a breakaway.”
Then in sudden-death overtime late in the 92
nd minute, Rosenberg scored on what Eaton described as a fantastic shot to the far-right post from about 15 yards out to give the Golden Eagles (3-3-1 overall, 1-3-1 PSAC) the win.
“Rosie scored an unbelievable goal,” Eaton said. “It was a fantastic goal. She fired it into the top corner. The best part was her high school team was here to watch it.”
Mansfield (1-5, 0-4) took a 1-0 lead early in the 26
th minute on a goal from three yards out by Erika Moyer off an assist from Leah Fuerst.
“We didn't play very well for a lot of the game,” Eaton said. “But we hung in there. We waited until the 70
th minute to put pressure on their goal.
“I have to give
Emily Heasley a lot of credit. She came into the match with about 15 minutes left in regulation and really turned the game around for us.”
Laura Saussol got the win in net for Clarion making six saves.
