(California, Pa.): Clarion's defense kept the game scoreless into the second quarter, but #17 ranked California broke open a scoreless tie with 20 unanswered points over a four-minute span before halftime to lead the Vulcans to a 40-13 win over Clarion on Saturday afternoon.
Held at Adamson Stadium, Clarion drops to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC-West, while the Vuclans raised their record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Western Division.
Early in the second quarter , with the game scoreless, the Clarion offense drove the pigskin from its own 23 to the Cal 33. On the drive Eagle QB
Ben Fiscus completed a 16-yard pass to
Evan Mastele and another 28-yarder to
Anthony Becoate. On fourth and 5 at the Cal 33 QB Fiscus punted the ball to the Vulcan 5 hoping to pin the Vulcans in their own territory.
Cal used the opportunity to drive 95-yards for the game's opening score. QB Peter Lalich was 6 for 6 on the drive for 70 yards, the last completion a 16-yard td to Chedrick Cherry at 5:32 of the first for a 7-0 lead.
On Clarion's next series
Brandon Akins fumbled on second and five at the 33, and Santia picked up the ball at the Eagle 35 and rambled into the endzone for a big Vulcan score. Cal led 14-0 at 4:23 of the second.
Cal took a 20-0 halftime lead when Lalich tossed a 56-yard scoring pass to Thomas Mayo with 1:10 left before intermission.
Down 27-0 in the third quarter, Clarion mounted its first scoring drive – going 70-yards in 14 plays to cut the lead to 27-6. The drive was fueled by a 20-yard run from backup qb
Eric Coxon on a fake punt (4
th & 6) from the Clarion 34 to put the Eagles in scoring position at the Vulcan 46. A roughing the pass penalty on Cal put the ball at the Vulcan 43, and then Fiscus ran for 13 yards to the 28. On third and 20 at the 38, Fiscus hit a big 23-yard completion to
Jon Reid to the Cal 15, and a Cal penalty on the play had the Eagles in business at the Vulcan 8. On third and goal at the 3,
John Fuhrer crashed over the left side for the Eagle td. A try for two-points failed and left the score 27-6 at 47-seconds of the third.
Cal went ahead 34-6 on a 1-yard run from Jeff Knox at 11:37 of the fourth, then made it 40-6 when Lalich hooked up with Mayo for a 65-yard td pass at 7:35 of the fourth.
Clarion scored its final points driving 88 yards in only 6 plays. Starting at its own 12, Fuhrer rushed for 10 yards, and Fiscus completed a 14-yarder to
Robert Tantlinger and 12-yarder to
Ryan Wolfe. Akins scampered for 17-yards and Fiscus hit Tantlinger for 14 yards to the Cal 21. A personal foul on Cal put the pigskin at the Cal 10, and on first down, Fiscus rolled outside left end and into the endzone for the Clarion td.
Tyler Ruark's kick at 5:22 made the final score 40-13.
Clarion had 271 yards of total offense including 149 rushing and 122 passing. Fiscus completed 10 of 21 aerials for 122 yards and also rushed for 45 yards and 1 td.
Brandon Akins led the rushing attack with 48 yards on 19 carries, and Fuhrer had 37 yards and 1 td on 10 attempts.

Cal posted 526 yards of offense including 176 rushing and 350 passing. Lalich completed 23 of 32 passes for 350 yards and 3 td's. Tomas Mayod 7 grabs for 164 yards and 2 td's. Running back Lamont Smith rushed 17 times for 155 yards to lead the ground game.
Clarion travels to Slippery Rock next Saturday for a 6pm game, while California visits Lock Haven for a 7:30 pm start.
