CLARION LOSES 45-0 AT #16 IUP

Box Score                 (Indiana, Pa.): Clarion's offense made five trips inside the IUP 30 yard line, and three times had first and goal inside the Crimson Hawk 5, but the IUP defense, ranked #1 in the nation, held the Golden Eagles scoreless and went on to defeat Clarion 45-0 in a PSAC-Western Division game on Saturday afternoon.

                Held at George P. Miller Stadium, IUP, ranked #16 in the latest AFCA poll, upped its overall record to 8-1 and 5-1 in the PSAC-West, while clarion dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the West.

                Clarion totaled 253 yards of offense on the day, with qb Ben Fiscus completing 12 of 29 passes for 181 yards,  but got a got a taste of what was to come in its opening possession. Able to move the pigskin against the nation's #1 defense, Clarion drove from its own 24 to the IUP 42. On fourth and two at the 42, Clarion running back Travis Day was stopped by the Hawk defense at the line of scrimmage ending the drive.

                Late in the first quarter IUP took a 7-0 lead capping a 73-yard, 8-play drive when qb Mike Box hit Anthony Meriweather for a 23-yard td pass at 1:20.          

                The Crimson Hawks made it 14-0 in the second quarter when Box scrambled and ran down the left sideline 22-yards to paydirt. Brett Ullman's PAT at 9:46 gave IUP a 14-0 lead.

                Ullman made it 17-0 at 3:17 of the second quarter when he booted a 40-yard field goal.

                Clarion qb Ben Fiscus drove the eagles from their own 20 into IUP territory, but the drive ended when Marvens Toussaint intercepted a Fiscus pass at the IUP 29 and the Hawks took a 17-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

                IUP made it 24-0 early in the third quarter when Box hit Terrill Barnes on a look in pass that broke 54-yards for another Hawk td.

                Clarion drove from its own 20 to the IUP 4 in two plays. Travis Day rushed for 24 yards to the 44, then Fiscus hit Jon Reid down the left sideline for 41-yards to the 15, and with a penalty on the play for a horse collar tackle, put the Eagles at the 8. After a potential td pass was dropped in the endzone, Day rushed to the 4 on second down, then lost a yard bringing up fourth down. Fiscus scrambled on the fourth down pass play, found tight end Anthony Becoate at the 3, but the Eagle tight end was tackled at the 2 and turned the ball over on downs.

                On first down IUP running back Harvie Tuck, who entered the game as the nation's leading rusher but was held to 99 yards on 25 carries, fumble the on a hit by Adam Bostick. Ryan Slack recovered at the IUP 4 giving the Eagles another opportunity to score.

                But the Eagles again were unable to hit paydirt . After two rushes netted minus 5 yards, Fiscus went back to pass from his 9, hit Becoate for an apparent td, but the Eagles were called for interference and the ball was brought back to the IUP 23. Again Fiscus tried to hit Becoate across the middle, but the ball went off the tight end's hand and Toussaint made a diving interception at the 5 yard line ending the scoring chance.

                IUP sealed the game driving 95 yards in 13 plays and scored when Tuck scored on a three-yar d run. Making the score 31-0 with 2:24 left in the third quarter.

                After IUP went ahead 38-0, Clarion had another great scoring chance. Fiscus hit tight end Mike Deitrick for 47 yards to the IUP 5 yard line. On first down Fiscus scrambled to his right, lost the handle on the football, and IUP's Terrell Holloway scooped up the ball and returned it to the Clarion 45. De'Antwan Williams scored on a 43-yard td run to make the final 45-0.

                Clarion had 72 rushing yards and 181 passing yards on the day. Travis Day had 12 carries for 70 yards. Receiver Jon Reid caught 5 passes for 77 yards.

                IUP finished with 477 yards of offense, including 205 rushing and 272 passing. The #1 running in the nation, Harvie tuck, was held to 99 yards and 1 td on 25 carries and a 3.9 yard per carry average, well below his 6.8 average for the season. Williams had 99 yards and 1 td.

                QB Mike Box hit 9 of 10 passes for 179 yards and 2 td's.

                Clarion's defense was led by Jacob Heintz who was in on 15 tackles, had 2 sacks and a total of 4 tfl's. Andrew Paronish made 11 stops, while Julian Howsare added two more sacks to his season total, giving him 13 on the season.

                Clarion returns home next Saturday to host Edinboro in a 1pm game at Memorial Stadium.
