ROSSI HOMERS BUT CLARION DROPS DH AT GANNON

Matt Rossi hit a HR in Game One, but Gannon sweeps doubleheader from Clarion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ERIE – Gannon rallied from a run down in the bottom of the seventh to beat Clarion 4-3 in Game Two of a doubleheader and get the twinbill sweep from the Golden Eagles in PSAC West action Friday at Gannon.
 
Clarion (5-9 overall, 4-2 PSAC West), which lost a 15-10 slugfest in Game One, had broke a 2-all tie with a run in the top of the seventh when Ken Morgan doubled to left and pinch runner Drew Pirritano scored on a Bill Hasson single to center.
 
But Gannon rallied in the bottom of the inning for two runs off Clarion starter and loser Brandon Slater, who pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on 10 hits and a walk while striking out two.
 
Clarion took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second when Kasey Clinton and Cole Heffner each walked before Morgan hit a sacrifice fly and Hasson had an RBI double.
 
Gannon tied the game with a pair of runs in fifth.
 
Hasson had two of Clarion's three hits going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
 
In Game One, Jerico Weitzel and Morgan each had three-hit games, but Clarion couldn't overcome a 15-run outburst by Gannon.
 
Weitzel was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Morgan was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Matt Rossi also went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI, while Scott Berkes was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
Clarion led 6-1 after 1 ½ innings thanks to a three-run first and a three-run second. Jon Kemmer and Morgan each had RBI doubles in the first while Josh Beimel had a run-scoring single. Jon Roncolato then added a sacrifice fly in the second, and the Golden Eagles added two more runs in the inning thanks to Gannon errors.
 
But Gannon score four in the second and four in the fourth to take a 9-6 lead before Clarion answered with a pair of runs in the fifth to get back within one.
 
Weitzel had a bases-loaded single in the inning, and Roncolato also added a run-scoring base hit.  
 
The Golden Knights, though, put up a third four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to get the lead back to five, 13-8, before the Golden Eagles got a home run by Rossi and a two-our run-producing single by Berkes in the top of the sixth to get back within three, 13-10. But Gannon got the two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the scoring.
 
Brandon Slater started and took the loss for Clarion going three innings and allowing nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Kevin Gnacinski relieved allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out one in 1 2/3 innings of work. Sam Skraba finished off going 1 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits.
 
Clarion returns to action with a pair of games in Erie vs. Gannon Sunday. The games were originally slated for Clarion Saturday, but field problems forced the moving of the games to Gannon Sunday.
