Box Score 2 Clarion, Pa. – Despite Game Two home runs from
Jon Kemmer and
Ken Morgan, the Clarion University baseball team was swept by Slippery Rock in its home-opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Kemmer blasted a two-run shot, his third of the season, in the third inning, while Morgan connected on his second homer in as many days and his third of the year in the fourth, but Clarion lost Game Two 10-5 after falling 12-1 in the first game.
In Game Two, Slippery Rock blasted out to a 4-0 lead after 2 ½ innings before Kemmer's two-run shot that scored
Jerico Weitzel, who had walked, in the bottom of the third got the Golden Eagles back within two, a 4-2.
Slippery Rock (13-17-1 overall, 6-6 PSAC West) answered with two runs of its own in the fourth inning to make it 6-2 before Clarion (6-16, 5-7) looked poised for a big inning of its own in the bottom of the fourth when it loaded the bases with no outs. But
Jon Roncolato hit into a run-producing double play, and Kemmer flew out to right just missing a hanging curve ball leaving Slippery Rock still ahead three, 6-3.
The Rock added to their lead with four more runs in the fifth to go up 10-3 before Morgan's solo shot onto the softball field in left-center field made it 10-4. The Golden Eagles then scored a run in the seventh when Kemmer walked with one out, Morgan singled and
Matt Rossi doubled home Kemmer with two outs.
Kemmer was 2-for-3 in the game with the home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Morgan was also 2-for-3 with the home run, a run scored and an RBI.
Brett Whitman took the loss going four innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits and two walks while striking out three.
T.J. Anderson allowed four runs, all earned, on two hits and two walks while striking out two in 2/3 of an inning.
Sam Skraba and
Eric Hesdon finished off throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings with Skraba going 1 1/3 innings allowing two hits and Hesdon pitching a scoreless, hitless seventh walking one and striking out one.
In Game One, Slippery Rock took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third before exploding for a six-spot in the fourth to go up 9-0. The Rock then added three more in the fifth before Clarion got its lone run in the bottom of the fifth when a Rossi fielder's choice scored Kemmer, who was 1-for-3 in the game with the run scored.
Brandon Slater took the loss going 3 2/3 innings and allowing eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out three. Roncolato allowed one earned run thanks to a pair of walks in 1/3 of an inning.
Cameron Damski surrendered three earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one in a 1/3 of an inning before Skraba and
Kevin Gnacinski combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Skraba allowed two hits and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings while Gnacinski walked one and struck out one in an inning of relief.
Clarion returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Bloomsburg in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
