ROSSI HOMERS TWICE, CLARION SPLITS WITH POINT PARK

Matt Rossi hit his 6th and 7th home runs of the year Tuesday.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLARION – Matt Rossi bashed his 6th and 7th home runs on Tuesday as Clarion (8-22, 5-11) split with visiting Point Park University (32-7, 4-0).

With the solo home run in game 1, Rossi logged his 100th career RBI as a Clarion University Golden Eagle.  He is just the third player since 1979 to accomplish the feat.

In game one, Point Park used two 4-run innings in the 2nd and 6th innings to log an 8-4 win.

Ossie Alfonzo started the second inning with a hard hit ball that resulted in a throwing error by Clarion shortstop Jerico Weitzel.  Marlon Leyva singled to right field advancing Alfonzo to second with no outs.  Following a wild pitch that moved both runners up one base, Clarion starting pitcher Seth Peterson struck out Steve Dujka before Jonathan Tasis ripped a single through the middle, scoring both Alfonzo and Leyva.  Don McDuffee then singled to right field, advancing Tasis to third.  Next up was Tom Pasinski who singled to right field, scoring Tasis.  Tom Birko then reached on an error by third baseman Bill Hasson, scoring McDuffee, who advanced to third on the Pasinski single.  Peterson then got Rob Novia and Lee Bodnar to ground out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Rossi answered with a solo home run, his first home run of the day.  Josh Beimel then singled and was driven in by Weitzel, cutting the Point Park lead to 4-2.

Point Park got things going once again in the top of the 6th as Alfonzo and Leyva started the inning off with singles before Dujka doubled to left center, scoring Alfonzo.  Tasis then singled to center, driving home Leyva and forcing Peterson out of the game.  Clarion reliever Kevin Gnacinski got McDuffee to fly out to left field before walking Pasinski, loading the bases.  Birko then singled to center, scoring Dujka and Tasis.  Gnacinski got Novia to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Clarion answered in the bottom of the 7th after Scott Berkes reached on a throwing error by the shortstop.  Weitzel and Jon Kemmer both walked to load the bases, for Ken Morgan, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Berkes.  Hasson then blasted a double into left field, scoring Weitzel from second and Kemmer from first.  The rally fell short as Rossi flied out to center field and Hasson was doubled-up at second on the play.

Jon Roncolato led Clarion in game 1, going 2-3 with two singles.  Hasson, Rossi, Beimel and Berkes all added one hit each.  Seth Peterson took the loss allowing 9 hits, 8 runs, and notched 4 strikeouts.

In the weather-shortened game two, Clarion scored at least one run in every inning but the 5th en route to a 10-5, 6-inning win.

Weitzel led off the bottom of the 1st with a triple off the outfield fence.  Hasson eventually scored Weitzel on a fielder's choice.

Clarion scored again in the bottom of the 2nd as Beimel singled to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Nick Maskrey.  Beimel advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Berkes.

Clarion was back at it in the bottom of the 3rd as Morgan reached on an error by the third baseman before Rossi struck gold for the second time of the day with a 2-run home run over the left field fence.

Point Park narrowed the lead to 4-1 in the 4th before Maskrey singled, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Pirritano.  Berkes singled in front of Weitzel who singled, driving home Maskrey.  Kemmer then cleared the bases with a triple to right center that bounced off the fence.

Clarion added 3 more insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th as Weitzel led off with a single and Kemmer walked.  Roncolato then doubled to right center, bringing home Weitzel and Kemmer.  Roncolato eventually scored on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 10-5.

The game was called in the top of the 7th due to inclement weather that was hindering players from seeing the ball.

Weitzel led Clarion in game 2, going 3-4 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored.  Beimel and Maskrey, and Berkes each collected 2 hits.

NOTES:  Rossi now has 7 HR and 29 RBI on the season, leading the team in both … Morgan and Kemmer had their 8-game hit streaks snapped today in game 1 … Morgan had a 9-game stretch earlier this year … Weitzel needs two more stolen bases to tie the mark of 16 set by James Barton in 1979
