Box Score 2 INDIANA, Pa. – A pair of five-run innings, one in each game, helped the Clarion University baseball team sweep a road PSAC West doubleheader at IUP Saturday.
The Golden Eagles (11-23 overall, 8-12 PSAC West) used a five-run fifth in Game One to get an 8-6 victory and then road the coattails of a five-run first in Game Two to a 7-2 win.
Jon Kemmer was the offensive hero of the day for Clarion going a combined 3-for-7 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs in the twinbill. He was 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in Game One and then went 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth of the season, two RBIs and two runs scored in Game Two.
Clarion also got a stellar outing from
Brandon Slater in the second game, as the junior pitched a complete-game allowing the two runs while scattering seven hits. He walked two and struck out a career-high eight.
In the opener, IUP took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second off starter and winner
Brett Whitman, who went six-plus innings allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits and five walks while striking out one.
But the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game on a two-run double by Kemmer in the third that scored
Scott Berkes and
Jerico Weitzel. Clarion then made it 3-1 in the fourth when
Jon Roncolato singled home
Josh Beimel with one out. Beimel had started the inning with a base hit.
IUP, though, responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead at 5-3 before Clarion's bats had the answer with the five-run fifth.
Weitzel and Kemmer got the rally started by drawing back-to-back walks leading off before
Ken Morgan loaded the bases with a single. With one out,
Matt Rossi singled home Weitzel, and then Beimel delivered a two-run double and Roncolato a two-run single to put Clarion ahead 8-5.
IUP got one run back in the bottom of the seventh before
Kevin Gnacinski picked up the save retiring the final two batters with the tying run on second. Gnacinski went one inning allowing one hit and no runs.
Rossi was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Beimel was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and two RBIs and Roncolato was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in Game One.
Clarion wasted little time breaking open Game Two thanks to the five-run first. Weitzel scored the first run on a wild pitch before
Seth Peterson singled home Kemmer.
Bill Hasson then delivered a two-run base hit, and Weitzel, who walked twice in the inning and three times in the game, drew a bases-loaded walk.
IUP got a run back against Slater in the third before Clarion scored twice more in the fourth thanks to a two-run home run by Kemmer. The Crimson Hawks (17-20-1, 5-11) then scored their final run in the sixth.
Clarion returns to action when it hosts at 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Kutztown Sunday.
