KEMMER CONTINUES GREAT PLAY BUT CLARION FALLS TWICE AT M-HURST

Jon Kemmer ran his streak of reaching base to 11 straight plate appearances before being put out in the first inning of Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. – Jon Kemmer's dominance continued Friday with another three-hit day, but Mercyhurst swept a key doubleheader from the Golden Eagles taking Game One 11-7 in walk-off fashion and then winning Game Two 4-1.

Kemmer ran his streak of reaching bases in consecutive plate appearances to 11 before being put out in the first inning of Game Two while extending his hit streak to seven games and his streak of reaching base to 18 games. He is now raising his average to .404 and his on-base percentage to 537.

But Mercyhurst (31-11 overall, 12-6 PSAC West) took Game One 11-7 rallying from deficits of 6-1 and 7-6 winning the game on a one-out grand slam by Shane Latshaw off Jerico Weitzel.

Latshaw then hit another home run in Game Two helping to pave the way to the 4-1 Lakers victory.

In Game One, Clarion (11-27, 8-14) pounced early and led 4-1 after two innings thanks to a pair of runs in each of the first two frames.

A Kemmer double in the first put runners on second and third and led to a sacrifice fly by Ken Morgan and a two run-scoring base hit by Matt Rossi.

Then in the second, after Mercyhurst had scored a run in the bottom of the first, Kemmer drew a bases loaded walk and Morgan hit another sac fly.

Clarion added to its lead with two in the fourth on a two-run home run by Kemmer, but Mercyhurst tied the game with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning off starter Mike Dunn with an error on Clarion second baseman Scott Berkes leading to three unearned runs in the inning.

The Golden Eagles, though, picked up their senior second baseman getting a run back in the fifth thanks to back-to-back singles by Bill Hasson and Rossi leading off the inning, the latter on bunt, a sacrifice bunt by Berkes and a run-scoring single by Josh Beimel. But Clarion left runners on second and third in the inning, and that came back to hurt when Mercyhurst retied the game with a run off Dunn in the sixth.

Clarion then had a chance to retake the lead in the seventh with runners on first and second with one out but couldn't get the key hit.

The Lakers then got a single, a sac bunt and a walk off reliever Sam Skraba before Clarion manager Mike Brown went to Weitzel who walked a batter to load the bases before surrendering the grand slam.

Skraba took the loss in relief of Dunn who pitched six innings allowing seven runs, four earned, on 11 hits and two walks while striking out five.

Offensively for Clarion, Beimel, Rossi, Weitzel and Hasson joined Kemmer with two hits each.

In Game Two, Mercyhurst picked up two in the third on a two-run shot by Latshaw before adding two unearned runs in the fourth to go up 4-0 with Latshaw picking up another RBI.

Clarion scored its lone run in the sixth when Weitzel scored on a passed ball. But the Golden Eagles left six on base in the game including five in the last three innings.

Brett Whitman took the loss going five innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on 10 hits while striking out two.

Weitzel, Kemmer, Rossi, Berkes and Nick Maskrey had hits for Clarion.

The two teams are slated to resume their four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Clarion Saturday.
