Box Score WHEELING, W. Va. – Clarion sophomore goalkeeper
Laura Saussol became the second goalie in school history to record three consecutive shutouts, as the visiting Golden Eagles played to a 0-0 tie with Wheeling Jesuit Tuesday night in Wheeling, W. Va.
Saussol made four saves in becoming the first Clarion keeper since Jenna Kulik in 2009 to record three straight shutouts. Kulik's three shutouts also came in the season's first three games.
“She made one very good save to keep the scored tied, kudos to her for playing another great game,” Clarion head coach Rob Eaton said.
Clarion's offense, despite getting eight shots on goal, couldn't beat Wheeling Jesuit keeper Holly Kraus. Kraus made three key saves in the overtime periods which helped lead to the second 0-0 tie for the Golden Eagles (1-0-2) in the season's first three contests.
“This is a really tough place to come and get a win,” Eaton said. “I thought for the third straight game, we were the best team on the field.”
With three of the four total shots in overtime, Clarion had the better of the chances in the extra sessions. But Kraus made two saves in the first overtime stopping
Autumn Rosenberg and
Alexa Ream and then denied an opportunity from
Bethany Naugle in the second overtime.
Wheeling Jesuit's lone shot in overtime came in the 108
th minute when Jessie Vilkofsky shot wide.
Both teams had chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation, as Naugle shot wide for Clarion in the 89
th minute after Jenna Klemkowsky had a shot go wide in the 86
th minute.
Clarion's Mackenzie Stove was also stopped by Kraus in the 82
nd minute.
For the game, Clarion outshot the Cardinals (0-3-1) 12-9 including 8-4 in shots on goal. But Kraus made eight saves including two on Stover and one on Naugle, who had three total shots.
Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Friday at California before traveling to Shippensburg for a 4 p.m. contest Saturday.
NOTES – Saussol now has six career shutouts, the third most in school history … In getting three consecutive shutouts to start the season, Saussol has made 14 saves. Kulik needed to make only seven saves in getting her three shutouts to start the 2009 season but won Clarion won all three of those contests.
