Box Score CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion University women's soccer team defeated Alfred State 3-0 in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
The Golden Eagles got things started early in the game. In the 10
th minute,
Mackenzie Stover took a pass from
Liz Ventura and found the back of the net from 25 yards out to give Clarion a 1-0 advantage.
"We got a lot of players into the game today," said Clarion head coach Rob Eaton. "We played well and were able to keep the ball in our zone for the majority of the match."
The Golden Eagles had multiple chances to extend their lead in the first half. Alfred State goalkeeper Krista DeCarlo, who finished with 11 saves, had some big saves to keep the game 1-0 heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Clarion was able to extend its lead in the 61
st minute when
Kathleen Warner found the back of the net from 25 yards out.
Nikita Bonnell got the assist on the goal.
"We played the way I expected us to," said Eaton. "We had a lot of chances to score especially in the second half."
After
Alyssa Katz had her shot hit the crossbar,
Stephanie Sikora was able to redirect the shot into the goal to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead in the 71
st minute.
Alfred State (8-3-1) finished with eight shots in the match.
Clarion (4-5-3, 3-5-3 PSAC) finished with a season high 23 shots in the match with 14 of them being on net.
Alissa Spencer led the way with seven shots for the Golden Eagles.
Alyssa Katz added four while Bonnell and Stover each finished with three.
Laura Saussol had four saves in goal for Clarion.
The Golden Eagles return to PSAC play on Saturday where they will host IUP at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
