Box Score CLARION, Pa – The Clarion University women's soccer team dropped a hard fought battle 1-0 to Mercyhurst 1-0 Tuesday evening at Memorial Stadium.
"I thought our intensity and commitment in the second half and overtime was great," said Clarion Head coach Rob Eaton. "I thought the girls put themselves in a better position and took the game to the other team."
Mercyhurst (7-7-1, 6-6-1 PSAC) came out firing shots right from the first whistle. The Lakers recorded 16 shots, six on goal, in the first half but Clarion goalkeeper
Laura Saussol was able to keep the Lakers off the board.
The Golden Eagles (4-7-3, 3-7-3 PSAC) finished with three shots in the first half. The Golden Eagles had their best scoring chance in the 29
th minute when
Nikita Bonnell missed just wide of the net.
"I think the big thing tonight was to get
Cassaundra Soars back on the field," said Eaton. "She showed us some energy and commitment and the fiery nature we have been missing."
In the second half, neither team was able to get anything going on the offensive end. Mercyhurst outshot the Golden Eagles 7-1 in the period.
Neither team was able to record a shot in the first overtime, but in the second session, Nicole McAlpin found the back of the net in the 102
nd minute to give the Lakers the victory.
Saussol finished was able to stop nine of the ten Laker shots on goal in the match.
"Our defending was much better after the break," said Eaton. "If we can play games with a better defensive attitude like that more often, I think we will be okay."
