HOWSARE LEADS CLARION TO 41-2 WIN OVER SETON HILL

Game Highlights 

                (Clarion, Pa.): Clarion All-America defensive end Julian Howsare (Jr. Altoona) blocked 2 punts, recovered one in the endzone for a td and posted 3 tfl's and 10 tackles in leading the Golden Eagles to a 41-2 win over Seton Hill in an NCAA Division II and PSAC-Western Division game on Saturday afternoon.
 
                Played at Clarion's Memorial Stadium, the Eagles raised their overall record to 4-4 and 2-3 in the PSAC-West, while Seton Hill dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the West.
 
                Special teams had a big hand in Clarion's win on Saturday. Midway through the first quarter Clarion freshman Matt Lehman (Lower Burrell/Burrell) broke through the line and blocked a punt attempt by Seton Hill's Jesser Boulenmour at he goal line, the ball spin back into the endone and Lehman dove on the pigskin for Clarion's first score. Phil Esposito's (Fr. Brockway) PAT gave Clarion a 7-0 lead at 7:36 of the first quarter.
 
                Early in the second quarter the Griffins went back in punt formation and Clarion's special teams rose to the occasion again. Howsare broke through the line, blocked the punt, dove backwards about five yards into the endzone and recovered the ball for Clarion's second blocked punt for a td, giving Clarion a 13-0 lead.
 
                Seton Hill scored their only points of the game on the PAT attempt. A high snap and a fumble was recovered by Philip Moreland around the 10 yard line and returned the ball 90-yards for a defensive 2-point conversion making the score Clarion 13 Seton Hill 2 at 11:44 of the second quarter.
 
                After Seton Hill qb Travis McClam was sacked by Adam Bostick (Sr. Lititz) at the Clarion 40 yard line on a  fourth and 12, the Golden Eagles drove 60 yards to paydirt, led by a fake punt attempt. Clarion had fourth and 7 at its own 43 when Kyle McWreath (So. Washington/Trinity), one of the "up backs", took the snap and ran 22-yards to the Seton Hill 35. Chris Liberto rushed 32 yards on the next play to the 3 and Travis Day (So. Jeannette/Hempfield) scored on a 5-yard run two plays later to give Clarion a 20-2 halftime lead.
 
                In the third quarter Clarion drove 81 yards in 10 plays to take a 27-2 lead. Bobby Thomas (Jr. Reading/Exeter Twp.) scored on a 32-yard run on fourth and 2 at the SH 32 at 7:45 of the third quarter.
 
                Later in the third quarter Clarion took over at the Seton Hill 35 and needed only 3 plays to score. QB Darelle Carson (Fr. Pgh. Perry) ran for 31 yards to the Griffin 1, and Thomas rushed over on the next play to give Clarion a 34-2 lead with 1:34 left in the third.
 
                Clarion's final score came as a result of linebacker Eddie Kurtz (So. Pgh. Avonworth) recovery of a Seton Hill fumble at the Griffin 14. Four plays later Carson tossed a 12-yard td pass to Eric Frye (Fr. Pgh. Perry) at 13:20 of the fourth to make the final score Clarion 41 Seton Hill 2.
 
                Clarion posted 351 yards of total offense including 282 yards rushing and 69 yards passing. Carson completed 5 of 14 passes for 69 yards and 1 td, and rushed 16 times for 73 yards. Bobby Thomas carried 14 times for 59 yards and 2 td's, while Travis Day had 53 yards and 1 td on 10 rushes.
 
                Clarion's defense held Seton Hill to 179 yards of total offense. The Griffins had 114 rushing yards – led by Bryant Harper who carried 18 times for 67 yards, and qb Travis McClam who had 44 yards on 17 tries. McClam completed 5 of 12 passes for 21 yards.
 
                Eagle defensive end Julian Howsare had an outstanding day posting 10 tackles, 3 tfl's for -13 yards, 2 blocked punts (recovered 1 for td), and a qb hurry in the three quarters that he played.
 
                Also leading the Eagle defense were Rocco Yauger (So. Trafford) with 10 tackles and 1 tfl, Adam Bostick with 4 hits, 2 sacks and another tfl, and an interception by Malik King (So. Indiana).
 
                Clarion returns to Memorial Stadium next Saturday to host IUP in a 1pm kickoff. The game will also serve as Senior Day at Clarion where 11 seniors will be honored in pre-game ceremonies… Those seniors are Adam Bostick, Nathan Conway, Mark Divins, Mike Felker, Ben Fiscus, Matt Long, Evan Mastele, Terrance Perfilio, Jon Reid, Ren Yonker, Mike Zak…. The last time Clarion yielded only a safety in a game was a 7-2 win over Fairmont State in 1985.
