Box Score 2 ERIE – Despite taking a 2-0 early lead in Game Two of its PSAC West opening doubleheader at Gannon Sunday afternoon, the Clarion University baseball team was swept in the twinbill by scores of 13-0 in Game One and 4-2 in Game Two.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles (0-12 overall, 0-2 PSAC West) jumped out to the 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
Drew Pirritano got the rally started with a single and moved to third on a double by freshman
Mike Lockhart.
Jon Roncolato and
Nick Maskrey then each delivered RBI singles to give Clarion the lead.
Gannon, though, tied the game with single runs in the first and the second and then took the lead for good with two in the fourth.
Prior to the Golden Knights going out in front, Clarion had a chance to retake the lead in the top of the fourth when
Ryan Voisey reached on an error and moved to second on a passed ball. But Voisey was stranded in scoring position, and the Golden Eagles didn't threaten after that.
Caleb McGary pitched well in the loss going six innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits and a hit batter while striking out five.
Clarion's offense, though, didn't record a hit after the four-hit first inning.
In Game One, Gannon did all of its damage early off starter
Brett Whitman and reliever
Drew Vandermeer.
Whitman lasted two innings allowing eight runs on nine hits while striking out three. Vandermeer relieved and went 1 1/3 innings allowing five runs on four hits.
Ken DiBucci settled things down allowing only one base runner, on a hit batter, in his 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Lockhart led the offense with a pair of singles, while
Joe Holmberg added a base hit for Clarion.
Clarion is slated to return to action weather permitting at 1 p.m. Monday at Gannon to complete the season series with the Golden Knights. Clarion will be the home team in the doubleheader.
