Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. – Despite a strong first-game pitching performance from freshman
Tyler Delval, the Clarion University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader against Gannon in Erie Tuesday.
Clarion, the home team in both games, lost Game One 6-1 in eight innings and Game Two 15-2.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles (0-14 overall, 0-4 PSAC West) trailed 1-0 going to the sixth but tied the game at one in the bottom of the sixth when
Jon Roncolato doubled and scored on a pinch-hit double by
Bill Hasson.
But Gannon scored five runs in the top of the eighth off of two Clarion hurlers to win the game.
Delval pitched well allowing just one earned run in the first seven innings before giving up two in the eighth. He pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits and five walks while striking out four.
Shane Sullivan then allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.
Drew Pirritano led Clarion with three hits.
In the second game, Gannon used a four-run first and an eight-run third to take a 14-0 lead after 2 ½ before Clarion scored twice in the bottom of the third thanks to singles by
Joey Gierlak,
Joey Lopez and
Jordan Mesoraco loaded the bases and Pirritano had an RBI fielder's choice followed by a Roncolato RBI single.
Pirritano added a double in the game.
Josh Ponsoll took the loss going 2 1/3 innings and allowing nine runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one.
Sam Skraba relieved going 2 1/3 innings allowing three runs on three hits.
Chris Kumar then pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing three runs on two walks while striking out one.
Clarion returns to action Friday at Slippery Rock weather permitting.
